So much for childhood loyalties. Paulina Rubio and Thalia may have been in Timbiriche together when they were teens, but that doesn’t mean they are homies. Their eternal rivalry has been the stuff of Mexican tabloid covers for decades now. This apparently hasn’t ceased, as Paulina told a radio show — albeit in jest — that if asked to kiss Thalia a la Madonna and Britney, she’d pull a Mike Tyson and bite her ear off:
Paulina Rubio made it clear that she doesn’t like Thalia. In an appearance on the El piolín de la mañana radio show, she was asked who she would allow to kiss her a la Madonna-Britney Spears. The options were Carmen Salinas, la Chupitos or Thalía, to which “la Chica Dorada” responded without hesitation: “Thalía (…) on the ear, but like Mike Tyson,” she said, laughing.
I still remember back in the day when there was a war of words (or of songs) between la Pau and Alejandra Guzmán — and over a guy no less.

September 23rd was celebrated since 1868 by many Puerto Ricans as el Grito de Lares, when Puerto Ricans rose up against Spanish colonial rule and declared Puerto Rico a free nation in charge of its own destiny. Last year the FBI decided to use this date against the very people that celebrated that date by killing Filiberto Ojeda Rios, leader of the Puerto Rican People’s Army, Los Macheteros.
Tomorrow there will be a march and rally to commemorate the original grito and to form a united grito in memory of Filiberto and to demand that Puerto Rico and its people be in charge of their island, once and for all.
The march and rally will be tomorrow at 1 pm in Times Square where the group will proceed to the United Nations.

Ex Fujimori aide and Laura Bozzo’s ex-boyfriend, Vladimiro Montesinos, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for allegedly selling arms to Colombia’s FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia), according to Spain’s 20 Minutos:
This sentence, which follows 12 other sentences since Montesinos was detained in Venezuela in June of 2001, is the longest and is the one that he must serve out, since in Peru sentences are not culmulative.
Apparently, Montesinos procured the arms from Jordan, and sold them to the FARC, “committing crimes of violation of a foreign state’s sovereignty, political conspiracy, and illegal supplying of arms to subversive groups.”
Meanwhile, Montesinos’s ex main squeeze will gets 4 years of her own on a variety of charges.

With Hugo Chavez continuing his stand up act in Harlem (where he was welcomed warmly) and getting heat from Democratics and Republicans alike for calling it as he sees it, other South American leaders critical of U.S. policy in the region have gotten lost in the shuffle. Amy Goodmann and Juan Gonzalez of Democracy Now! conduct an extensive interview with Bolivian President Evo Morales . In the interview Evo distances himself from the comments made by Chavez calling President Bush “the devil” but says that the U.S. needs to get out of Iraq and defend the environment, specifically by fighting global warming. The interview also highlights Evo’s political career and the changes he’s made in Bolivia since soming into office.

The Latin Americanist reported yesterday on a bombshell story: Mexico’s Archbishop, Norberto Rivera, is being sued for allegedly covering up for a priest who was molesting a former altar boy, along with L.A.’s Cardinal Mahoney. The Catholic News Service tells us more about this scandal:
A Mexican man is suing the cardinals of Mexico City and Los Angeles, claiming the cardinals covered up crimes of a priest accused of sexually abusing boys on both sides of the border. In a civil suit filed in California, the man accused Cardinals Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles and Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City of negligence, claiming they aided the flight of Father Nicolas Aguilar Rivera and that they were partially responsible for sexual battery due to their negligence.
Spokesmen for both cardinals denied the charges.
In a Los Angeles court Sept. 19, Joaquin Aguilar Mendez of Mexico City filed the suit against the cardinals and the Diocese of Tehuacan, Mexico, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Aguilar alleged the cardinals transferred a Mexican priest to the United States in 1987 despite knowing that he had a record of molesting minors in Mexico. Cardinal Rivera headed the Diocese of Tehuacan at the time.
At a Sept. 20 press conference in Mexico City, Aguilar said the cardinals also helped Father Aguilar flee Los Angeles and return to Mexico, where Aguilar claims the priest raped him in 1994 when he was a 13-year-old altar boy.
Rivera was one of the myriad priests that were candidates to succeed Pope John Paul II.

La flaca mas bella del Universo aka Puerto Rican Zuleyka Rivera is using the power of her crown to represent the Latino community for a very worthy cause. Today she was appointed the International Ambassador for the Latino Commission on AIDS. In that role she will support local, regional, national and international initiatives in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, health education, capacity building and advocacy. The 18 year old Salinas native said:
I want to encourage HIV/AIDS awareness and education for my peers, but more importantly, I want to be an example for everyone who is afraid of being tested. Together we can all work toward the mutual goal of protecting our loved ones and our communities.

A few months ago everyone was buzzing about whether or not JLo was pregnant. She even talked about adopting a baby from Puerto Rico, but it seems she’s going to try to have not one, but TWO of her own, according to Spain’s 20 Minutos:
Singer and actress Jennifer López wants to have two children at the same time with her husband, salsero Marc Anthony, according the The Sun.To that end, López, 37, is undergoing fertility treatment at Cedars-Sinai clinic in Los Ángeles.
Jennifer is backing up that treatment with a strict diet based on prganic products.
According to 20 Minutos, the treatment is costing JLo thousands of dollars. I’m sure she can afford it, though.

Who cares what Hugo Chavez calls President Bush? Well ok I do but truth be told is that I also couldn’t help watching Telemundo’s Cotorreando with my lunch yesterday. On the chisme show it was “confirmed” that perpetually tanned crooner Luis Miguel and his novela star novia Aracely Arambula are expecting a child. The show claims that Aracely looks obviously pregnant with a child that is expected in December. Allgedly the couple will welcome a girl and are consdering naming her Marcela (after Luismi’s mami).
Claro que Luis Miguel and Aracely Arambula could be compared to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in terms of their strange secrecy so it remains to be seen if the pregnancy is as real as Luismi’s skin color.

La Mala posted last week about A.B. Quintanilla‘s “Mexican problem”, and the issue snowballed, leading Mexico’s ANDA organization (Asociación Nacional de Actores de México) to demand that A.B. apologize. According to People en Español, he’s doing just that:
“All of Mexico, forgive me, I am not a racist. That sentiment exists only in the U.S. and towards our countrymen when they are denied rights and when they are killed on the border, that is racism,” he said before more than 50 media outlets. “If I have to go door to door to Mexican homes asking for forgiveness, I’ll do it…the important thing is that Mexico listen to me and that it knows that it wasn’t my intention to offend anyone with what is seen on that video.”
He’s sounding a bit like Tiziano Ferro. I wonder if he’ll be saying sorry to anyone for using the “N” word.

Saturday Night Live, my on again off again favorite show (currently very off) and one of my favorite cast members (and first Latino on the show), Chileno Horatio Sanz are parting ways. And SNL isn’t just axing Sanz, but two other great cast members, though producers aren’t calling it a firing:
After nearly a month of speculation that the fates of several Saturday Night Live cast members were up in the air comes confirmation from NBC that regulars
Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz and Finesse Mitchell will not be returning to the late night staple. The non-announcement was made by simply omitting the players’ names from a press release touting the start of the show’s 32nd season, though a rep for the network denied there was any bad blood between the MIA cast and svengali producer Lorne Michaels or that their departure was the result of a firing.
“I believe there were mutual choices made,” NBC rep Marc Liepis told E! Online. “When you’re on the show for eight years, I don’t think you look at it as a firing.
So because you’ve been on the show a long time it means you aren’t fired when they tell you to hit the road? Interesting.
