7-11 Doesn't Want You to Gulp Venezuela's Oil

11:15 H | Topics: Business - Shopping - Venezuela

big-gulp-super-3.jpgBeing a NYC chica who uses mass transit to travel and bodegas for some of her fast food shopping needs, the news of 7-Eleven Inc. dropping Venezuela-owned Citgo as its gasoline supplier after more than 20 years doesn't really impact me. Pero it probably will influence drivers across the U.S. and the oil market in Venezuela. According to the corporate heads from the convenience store chain, the decision was at least partially motivated by Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez's recent comments before the United Nation's General Assembly.

"Regardless of politics, we sympathize with many Americans' concern over derogatory comments about our country and its leadership recently made by Venezuela's president," said 7-Eleven spokeswoman Margaret Chabris. "Certainly Chavez's position and statements over the past year or so didn't tempt us to stay with Citgo," she added.
So now 7-Eleven will move ahead with plans that were already in the works to to sell its own brand of gas and some are saying that the move has little to do with speeches about who the devil is and everything to do with dinero.
"This has nothing to do with Chavez," said Oil Price Information Service director Tom Kloza. "They (7-Eleven) just didn't want to be tied to one supplier." Kloza said all 7-Eleven did was seek out suppliers who could sell it the cheapest fuel and "that was not Citgo."

Uhm, you're a "chica" that uses mass transit to go a "bodega"? I don't think I'm the only one here who's like, what the fuck? Have you read what you wrote? Why would you take a bus or a train to go the corner store? (In NYC no less!) And your use of pero and dinero only work if you're trying to rhyme. Which you aren't.

Seriously, what are you writing? And more importantly, why are you writing this way? Maybe you could do a podcast of you talking this way. (Maybe then it would work.) I don't know, but that does not represent the way 1/1000th of all the Latinos I interact with express themselves.

Don't detract from what 7-11 is doing. That's some real serious shit.

Actually what I wrote was pretty damn clear. I am not going to even get into the politics of grammar and speech with you, because there are numerous discussions all over the web about that point and how it can be used as a way to silence POC and WOC.

By the way your critique sounds like its from someone I know. Hmm. I wonder......Marco perhaps? Don't start stupid blog war shit again.

Blog war shit? huh? what are you talking about? who the hell is Marco? (Really, who cares about glaciers and water and stupid things like that?)

All I'm saying, is it reads dumb. 7-11 parting with Citgo and the ramifications of that are important: you detract from that with your writing. Good journalism should never detract from content--opinion is ok, and really unavoidable. In other words, there should be no room for stupidity in good journalism (i.e. word choice).

I clicked on your blog and read what you wrote about "grammar being a tool of oppresion" and what that guy you linked to had to say. Very interesting. And really, I think he has a point. Who the fuck makes up grammar? And why? Especially within the scope of Latin America, with every country appropriating their own version of castellano. I'm not sure I agree with it being an "oppressor" but I see what you're saying about it.

Grammar is meant to be broken--any writing instructor will tell you that. But grammar should only be broken in choice moments. That is not a choice moment. (Nor is it really grammar.) I feel that the use of Spanglish is mighty important, especially with words like chisme and cariƱo for which there are no English definitions. But "pero" and "dinero" GTFOOHWTBS.
