ESC259546RO.jpgLa Mala posted last week about A.B. Quintanilla‘s “Mexican problem”, and the issue snowballed, leading Mexico’s ANDA organization (Asociación Nacional de Actores de México) to demand that A.B. apologize. According to People en Español, he’s doing just that:

“All of Mexico, forgive me, I am not a racist. That sentiment exists only in the U.S. and towards our countrymen when they are denied rights and when they are killed on the border, that is racism,” he said before more than 50 media outlets. “If I have to go door to door to Mexican homes asking for forgiveness, I’ll do it…the important thing is that Mexico listen to me and that it knows that it wasn’t my intention to offend anyone with what is seen on that video.”

He’s sounding a bit like Tiziano Ferro. I wonder if he’ll be saying sorry to anyone for using the “N” word.

SNL fires Sanz, first Latino cast member

1:56 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|TV · 3 Comments

20 Sep 2006

horatiosanz.jpgSaturday Night Live, my on again off again favorite show (currently very off) and one of my favorite cast members (and first Latino on the show), Chileno Horatio Sanz are parting ways. And SNL isn’t just axing Sanz, but two other great cast members, though producers aren’t calling it a firing:

After nearly a month of speculation that the fates of several Saturday Night Live cast members were up in the air comes confirmation from NBC that regulars
Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz and Finesse Mitchell will not be returning to the late night staple.

The non-announcement was made by simply omitting the players’ names from a press release touting the start of the show’s 32nd season, though a rep for the network denied there was any bad blood between the MIA cast and svengali producer Lorne Michaels or that their departure was the result of a firing.

“I believe there were mutual choices made,” NBC rep Marc Liepis told E! Online. “When you’re on the show for eight years, I don’t think you look at it as a firing.

So because you’ve been on the show a long time it means you aren’t fired when they tell you to hit the road? Interesting.

Chavez Says Bush is the Devil

1:40 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Politics|Venezuela · 4 Comments

20 Sep 2006

chavezun.jpgToday was Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez‘s turn to speak at the United Nations General Assembly and not surprisingly his statements have pissed people off. He called U.S. President Bush “the devil” and said the the room still smelled of sulfur. Chavez then proceeded to do the sign of the cross on himself. The speech went on to talk about the U.S. as an imperial power. Chavez’s speech garnered applause from the audience, which included only a low level U.S. Diplomat.

Are people really surprised or shocked by Chavez’s spoken word style? Is he really saying anything that he hasn’t said before? How much of the U.S. media’s reaction to Chavez’s statement has to do with the cultural differences between U.S. and Latin American style politics and politicians?

Latino Leaders Represent at the United Nations

11:21 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Latin America|Politics · Comments Off

20 Sep 2006

latin-america.gifThe U.S. media has been paying special attention to the United Nations General Assembly meeting going down here in NYC. Most of the focus has been on the verbal sparring between Iran’s Ahmadinejad and U.S. President Bush (who still can’t pronounce “nuclear”). Latin American leaders also represented however and had plenty to say. Among them Bolivian President Evo Morales who…:

…used a coca leaf as a prop during his speech which harshly criticized the “war on drugs” led by the U.S. “I invite the government of the United States to form a real alliance to combat drug trafficking and not just have excuses and pretexts to dominate us” said Morales who also spoke against neoliberal economic policies.

Our amigos over at The Latin Americanist have done a great job breaking down what some other Latino leaders said including outgoing Mexican pres Vicente Fox.

FBI Keeps the Heat on Rican Independentistas

9:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Puerto Rico · 1 Comment

20 Sep 2006

puertorico.jpgWith the 1 year anniversary of the murder of island independence leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios approaching on Saturday, the same federal agency responsible for his death is keeping the pressure on activists. Earlier this week the FBI decided to pay a visit to the homes of indpendence activists Liliana Laboy and the house of Norberto Cintron Fiallo in the San Juan area.

FBI spokesman Harry Rodríguez said the agents went to the homes as part of an ongoing investigation into the Macheteros, also known as the Puerto Rican People’s Army. He declined to provide details or say whether agents planned to arrest the activists or search their homes.

More than likely the feds want to get a head start and make people feel afraid so that they don’t hit the streets in memory of Filiberto. Rallies are planned for Saturday throughout Puerto Rico and here in the United States.
