Paulina: Sorry for using purse as a weapon

paulina_rubio_150b.jpgPaulina Rubio is saying sorry for pimp slapping a papparazzi in Miami with her handbag. Apparently the first version was that Pau was harrassed by a couple of photogs to the point of actually pulling some buttons off of her blouse, later to be debunked by airport cameras whose tapes showed Pau using her purse as a deadly weapon (article in Spanish).

Now, according to People en Español, Pau is recognizing her guilt and saying sorry:

Paulina Rubio knows when to admit she’s wrong, and that’s why she has accepted her responsibility in an incident in which she struck a female paparazzi at the Miami airport. “I made a mistake,” la Chica Dorada told Univision.com. “I’m sorry, I set a bad example and it isn’t right,” she said emphatically, but pointing out that the photojournalists were “putting the camera in my face” and “kicking and insulting me.”

Pau should stay her little colita in Spain, where they ADORE her (an adoration I was subjected to over and over again by Spanish press in the past few weeks).

Que se oiga un grito! But not in the Zócalo

238534777_00851d82b8_m.jpgIt’s that time of year again! The time when all of the great nation of Mexico dons the colors green, white and red to celebrate Fiestas Patrias, the celebration that marks Mexico’s independence from the Spanish crown. Tradition leads us to focus our eyes on Mexico City’s main square, the Zócalo, each year for said celebration in which the president emerges at midnight on the balcony to deliver the age-old “grito” of “Que viva México!”.

Today, in the midst of (and because of) the political drama that is playing out before the eyes of the people of Mexico, that tradition will change. To non-Mexicans it may not seem like such a big deal, but shock filled the air yesterday when it was announced that the grito will be delivered not in Mexico City’s main plaza, but in the city of Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato. Reason stated by the Mexican government: “solid evidence” that “defeated” candidate for the presidency, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and his supporters were planning to disturb the celebraciones patrias.

Was Orlando Burglary a Hate Crime?

Ihatericans.jpgWhen does a crime become a hate crime? That is the question surrounding a burglary in Orlando, Florida. Not only was the Aguirre family robbed of their car and $8,000 worth of items, they were also victims of hate messages on the walls and doors of their home.

“I was upset because it was something that I can’t believe,” family member Lisa Martinez said. “They drew on the doors. They said, ‘I took your car, I’m a white boy and I hate Puerto Ricans.’”

Additionally the criminals poured bleach into the familiy fish tank, killing all the fish.

Don’t Panic! It’s Time to Celebrate Being Hispanic

latin-america.gifYes it’s that time of year again. I admit that I hate the term “Hispanic” and feel it does little to express my experience growing up in the United States as a Nuyorican but I guess I should be happy that Hispanic Heritage Month, which kicks off officially today, is a full 30 days through October 15th. According to Wikipedia:

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

“September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.
