Morning After Pill Available in Chile

preven.jpgPresident of Chile and pediatrician, Michelle Bachelet, made a the groundbreaking decision to have birth control pills, including the morning after pill, available for free for all women over age 14 in public health clinics across the southern cone nation. The morning after pill was available in private pharmacies prior to this only for rape victims. Parental consent will not be needed for minors to gain access to the pills.

This is good news for Chilean women because it allows them more control over their reproductive health. In Chile abortion is illegal.
Compare this new progressive plan to the U.S.’s own which soon will have the morning after pill available over the counter, for a fee to adult women.

Mexico’s Electoral Court Explains Ruling

12:08 pm By Maegan La Mala · Controversia|mexico|Politics · Comments Off

FeCaLopOb.jpg In its final ruling, Mexico’s electoral court (TEPJF) did acknowledge that there was illegal campaign interference by President Vicente Fox and from the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE) in favor the governing National Action Party (PAN) candidate Felipe Calderón and against rival Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

They further recognized that the attack ads used against López Obrador were illegal, however, they pointed out that the AMLO had used the same tactics. Nevertheless, in the end, the seven-judge panel firmly stated that none of the irregularities was significant enough to have significantly altered the outcome of the election.

The unappealable ruling handed down by the electoral court, which in its 10 years of existence has never been accused of bias, details each of the irregularities that were found, but says that their impact was not strong enough to justify annulling the elections.

Under Mexican law, an election can only be annulled if widespread fraud can be “objectively proven.”

Michael Parmly said the United States had not taken up an invitation to attend the summit of 116 developing nations as an observer as it has in the past, noting that Washington had a better relationship with previous host Malaysia than it does with communist Cuba.

Expected to attend the summit are reps from U.S. “enemy” nations such as Iran, Syria, North Korea and Venezuela. Another country expected to represent is India. The summit is expected to endorse Iran’s nuclear energy program, comdemn the Israeli bombing of Lebanon and criticize U.S. sanctions on Cuba.
