Kinky is la Reina

Kin05.jpgToday Monterrey, Mexico based band Kinky officially released their third album Reina. While the band’s official press release tells of Gilberto, Ulisis, Carlos, Cesar, and Omar retreating into the Southern California mountins to record this latest album, its the chaos that surrounded tham that probably conributed to the nonstop thumping beat party that is Reina. While the band sought peace and quiet in a hillside cabin to record, mother nature had a different plan. A mudslide literally covered their instruments. Not even that could stop Kinky.

I’ll admit to having heard little of Kinky before the release of this album but based on Reina, I can’t wait to hear more. I tend to like my Latino music in Spanish so naturally I gravitated towards songs like Una Linea de Luz. Overall the album, which is both in English and Spanish features some accordian riffs just to make sure that listeners don’t forget that this is Mexican music. Adonde Van Los Muertos? features one of my favorites in the Mexican/Latino rock scene, Ely Guerra. Another song I really enjoyed was Again and So On which had an 80s sound that reminded me a little bit of Devo.

This cd is perfect for you next house party/cocktail with your amigos. Check out Kinky’s Reina. It’s on sale hoy mismo!

I won a pair of free tickets from an LA blog to see Kinky perform at the Avalon in Hollywood. I’ve seen them perform a number of times, but it’s always as part of lineup of other bands, so their sets are not too long. The show was great, lots of new music and old favorites. I got my dance on.

They are an AMAZING band live…if you like their music on CD you MUST see them in concert. One of the best bands you will ever see….I also saw them at the LA concert, so much fun! ;)

Their new Album REINA seems more in tune with the path they had initially taken- I wasn’t too keen on ATLAS, too CAKE sounding for my taste…
