I could count the Latinos presente at the awards on my hands, including Ms. Jennifer Lopez looking oh not so pregnant, in spite of rumores, in a short gold dress and matching head wrap that made her look, in the words of my mami, “a space cadet”. I think we all breathed a Boricua collective sigh of relief when she didn’t sing with hubby Marc Anthony. I’m happy she caught herself saying “masterpeach” cuz that was gonna be my headline for this morning.

vma2006-01.jpgChristina Aguilera looked stunning in that old school glamourous sort of way but more importantly she sang amazingly, as usual.

But the real reason I and many other Latinos tuned in was to see Shakira, well at least that’s why my daughter made me tune in. She performed Hips Don’t Lie for the millionth time but this time with a Bollywood twist. I couldn’t decide if it offended me or not as I couldn’t decide if she was trying to make the song even more exotic than mainstream USA thinks it is by culturally appropriating Indian dance and style with little other context.

Pero I have to say my favorite Latino moment was the commercial for MTV Tres with the young Latina clashing culturally over style and music with Calle 13 playing in the background.

I *loved* the MTV Tres commercial… What is the name of the Calle 13 tune?
