Well, he didn’t make VL’s Most Influential Latino list, but Ricky Martin is getting props anyway. The Latin Recording Academy is honoring Ricky as its “Person of the Year” for being a great “entertainer and humanitarian:
“The 34-year-old Puerto Rican pop star will receive the honor at a dinner and concert in New York City on Nov. 1. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Martin’s charitable efforts.“His musical accomplishments are matched by his endeavors as an advocate for the welfare of children around the world,” Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa said in a statement Thursday. “It is a great pleasure to honor this man of limitless talent, passion and sense of caring.”
Among other charitable endeavours, Ricky is involved in campaigns to combat internet predators and sex trafficking of children.

Remember the chupacabra? It’s that vampire alien creature that terrorized farm animals from here to South America and haunted children’s dreams almost as much as el cuco? It is my sad duty to inform readers that the chupacabra may have been killed. According to Comcast News:
Residents are wondering if an animal found dead over the weekend may be the mysterious creature that has mauled dogs, frightened residents and been the subject of local legend for half a generation.Michelle O’Donnell of Turner spotted the animal near her yard about a week before it was killed. She called it a “hybrid mutant of something. It was evil, evil looking. And it had a horrible stench I will never forget,”
The animal, which was said to be charcoal gray, weighing between 40 and 50 pounds and having a bushy tail, a short snout, short ears and curled fangs hanging over its lips was hit by a car. My only question is, what was the Chupacabra doing in Maine of all places? Is that where Chupi has his summer home?

17 Aug 2006Following up on Mala’s post yesterday about the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s ad which has offended many in the Latino community, it seems (as Mala points out in the comments section) that the negative press has worked, as the ad mysteriously disappeared from thr DDCC’s site last night, and apparently mum’s the word:
Democrats dropped an ad that Hispanics had criticized as unfairly depicting illegal immigrants as terrorists. The ad had disappeared from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s Web site Thursday. A link that had led to the advertisement now leads to a different ad.
No announcement was made about what happened to the ad. A DSCC spokesman did not return phone calls and an e-mail message seeking comment.
I hope heads are rolling over there, and that Democrats learn something from this. By attempting to tap into the fear of conservatives to try to win them over to “our side”, all they are doing is alienating those who they depend on for votes.

As we approach the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the gulf region it’s not only important to look back at what happened and why it went down the way it did, but how people are surviving or not now. A group of workers from across Latin America that were contracted as “guest workers” in New Orleans to work in hotels in the area filed a federal lawsuit yesterday saying that what they were promised isn’t what they were served.
They were recruited with false promises of good earnings and instead have been left with thousands of dollars in debt for their visas, recruitment fees and journeys here.
Workers paid thousands of dollars to recruitment companies working for Decatur Hotels LLC, which owns 15 hotels in NOLA.

The war of words going on between ex Kumbia King and group founder A.B. Quintanilla and his ex-friend Cruz Martinez is heating up. Not long ago, A.B. revealed to the world why he chose to leave the group and pointed out that the split was not amicable; apparently he was leaving because he was duped out of 1 million dollars by Cruz, and because grupera star Alicia Villareal, Cruz’s wife, had registered the name of Kumbia Kings under her own name in Mexico.
Now, according to People en Español, Cruz is firing back, and it ain’t pretty:
Martínez is angered by the accusation of the missing 1 million dollars, and says that he’ll make things clear “very soon” with documentation that will leave “everyone in shock”. Finally, the musician lamented the decline of his relationship with Quintanilla. “For me, a true friendship never ends. Para mí una amistad verdadera a. This shows me that this never was a true friendship.”
On the Cristina show, AB stated: “He’s not my friend anymore, and for me is just like anyone else that’s tried to hurt my family.” He also said that his friendship Cruz changed as a result of Martinez’s relationship with Alicia. A Yoko Ono regionmontana!

By now you should know that 31 year old single Mexican mami Elvira Arellano has been inside Aldalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago with her 7 year old son for three days now. She is not keeping her promise to a santo. she is keeping her promise to her child that she will stay with him and be a mami and confronting the U.S. government that seeks to deport her. Her son Saul was born in the United States and because of that is a U.S. citizen. Earlier this week Elvira was ordered to appear at an immigration office but instead she invoked an old school idea, taken by many activists before her, that churches are sanctuaries and went inside with her child. Elvira knows what’s up. She’s the President of United Latino Family, which lobbies for families that could be split by deportation. She is now one of those families.

Unlike his friend Pinochet, Alfredo Stroessner‘s day has come. The ex-dictator of Paraguay has died at the age of 93 in exile in Brazil after a month in the hospital.
Unlike other controversial Latin American dictators, Stroessner has kept a relatively low profile since his exile in 1989. From 20 Minutos:
Stroessner was born in Encarnación, in Southern Paraguay, November 3, 1912, and resided in Brasilia since two days after his defeat on February 3, 1989.The dictatorship he led for nearly 25 years concluded that day, when a coup de etat led by the now deceased general Andrés Rodríguez, then commander of the cavalry and in-law of Stroessner, was triumphant.
Rodríguez was de facto president for one month and then called for elections, from which he emerged as constitutional Head of State.
He remained in the government until 1993, when he was succeeded by Juan Carlos Wasmosy, the first civilian to govern Paraguay in 40 years.
During this exile in Brasilia, Stroessner strictly respected the silence imposed upon him by Brasilian authorities in exchange for offering him asylum and lived in absolute discretion.
Despite repeated attempts to have Stroessner extradited to his native country, Paraguayan authorities were unsuccessful in removing him from Brazil.

A recent ad sponsored by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has come to my attention because it is coming under attack from both Republicans and Democrats for being offensive to Latinos.
Pedro Celis, chairman of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, said in a statement Tuesday that the DSCC should remove the ad because it vilifies illegal Hispanic immigrants and is “appalling.”Houston City Councilwoman Carol Alvarado, a Democrat, sent a letter to DSCC Chairman Sen. Charles Schumer of New York asking that the ad be pulled. She said it could alienate Latino voters.

There’s a really interesting article up at AlterNet today regarding the first commercial airline bombing on Oct. 6, 1976.
Cuban-American terrorists and mercenaries blew up a Cuban civilian airliner. All 73 on board went down to a fiery and gruesome death, including the teenage members of the Cuban fencing team returning from a competition in Venezuela.
The article goes on to point the finger at well known figures in the Cuban exile community in Florida, namely Luis Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch and well known exile organizations like Alpha 66, Omega 7, Brothers To The Rescue, and Commandos L. The most disturbing thing though is that according to the article the individuals and organizations are being protected by the U.S. government.
