Latino Stereotypes Following Us to Work

8:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Careers| Labor| race · Comments Off

blogging.jpgAre there “Latino values” or is that just a broad mish-mash of ideas based on both the diversity that is found within the Latino community and on stereotypes? How does this idea of “Latino values” follow us into the workplace? A recent survey by the National Society for Hispanic Professionals (NSHP) asked just this question.

When I worked in investment banking as an analyst, one day I was called into the office of my managing director. I thought one of two things was going down. I was being fired for my big mouth or I was getting a promotion for my work, especially since I was the only Spanish speaker in an area that was closing deals with banks and companies in Latin America. I hadn’t anticipated the third option, the option that meant that no matter how well I worked I still would be viewed as “other”. My managing director called me into his office so I could tell his Latina maid what she had to do that day.

Black and Brown

blacklatino.gif Historically Black colleges are recruiting Latinos. According to an AP report earlier this month covered by both CNN.com and USAtoday.com

A great move for historically Black colleges since:
a. the country is moving towards becoming a greater mixture of colors, to embrace that fact is to embrace a more realistic sample of the population,
b. the creation of a more united minority front is just what the colored population of this country needs (especially in terms of voting and economic power) and,
c. learning how to understand Black culture (all Black people are not drug dealers), and Latino culture (all Latinas aren’t sluts who liked to be called “Mami”), will only lead to a greater understanding and respect of each.

And who knows, maybe both Latinos and Blacks will realize the fate of one minority group in the United States is the fate of them all? Maybe they’ll do something about it?

But is it a great move for Latinos?

Mexican Elections : Court to Rule Today

12:52 pm By Maegan La Mala · Controversia| Politics| mexico · Comments Off

28 Aug 2006

mexico03x200.jpgMexico’s federal election court (TEPJF) announced that they would decide most of the continuing inquiries to the July 2 presidential race today.

In a statement Sunday, the Federal Electoral Tribunal said it will hold a public session beginning at 8 a.m. during which it will rule on all 375 complaints contesting the official voting results.

It was unclear how long such a session would take, but at its conclusion, the court’s seven judges will likely be in a position to determine the election’s definitive outcome. The court’s statement, however, did not say if it would announce a president-elect at the session’s end.

Once the court’s seven judges have decided, they will make release the official results of the court-ordered partial recount. By law, the electoral court has until Sept. 6 to declare a president-elect or to annul the election.

Meanwhile, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) have came out and firmly stated that a court ruling in favor of Calderon would merely complete the fraud. AMLO has called on his supporters to hold a National Democratic Convention (NDC) on September 16 (Mexico’s Independence Day) at the encampment site. The purpose of the NDC is to discuss their options if Felipe Calderón were to be declared the winner by TEPJF. On Sunday, López Obrador told his supporters that during the convention they could determine if they should either lead a civil resistance movement against his rival or establish some type of parallel government.

Hate Crimes Target Guatemalans

10:35 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration| Newspapers · Comments Off

28 Aug 2006

map_guatemala.jpgWhat I love (really hate) about the report in yesterday’s New York Times about hate crimes against the Guatamalan community in West Palm Beach, Florida, is how right in the headline the fact that the crime victims are undocumented is highlighted (as “illegal”) as if their undocumented status makes it ok that they are being attacked. While the article attempts to make the point that the undocumented status of many Guatemalans makes them easy targets because of their distrust and fear of the criminal justice system, the fact that the NYT chooses to constantly use “illegal” as an adjective to describe the victims in an underhanded way lays the blame on the Guatemalans.

With such crimes on the rise — they are common enough to have a chilling street name, “Guat-bashing” — the Guatemalan-Maya Center in Lake Worth, Fla., and the Guatemalan Consulate in Miami, along with local law enforcement agencies, religious groups and banks, are working to help illegal immigrants from Guatemala protect themselves.

While the robberies, beatings, and even killings of immigrants are labeled as crimes, they are never called illegal. That label is saved for those being robbed, beaten, and killed. And nowhere are the real illegal activities being called hate crimes, which is exactly what they are since they target one specific population.

Eva Longoria Desperate not to be Typecast

4:24 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Chismes| Movies · Comments Off

25 Aug 2006

20060508-eva.jpgLa latina ama de casa, Ms. Eva Longoria doesn’t want to be seen as just another sex hungry greedy stereotype, like her character on Desperate Housewives, Gabriela Solis. Her latest role is as a special agent in the upcoming film, The Sentinel. But it seems that Hollywood has other plans.

She explained: “There is a shot of my butt in a tight skirt as I walk in the office. So my boss tells me to dress differently. It is all very important. If the guy never checked out my butt you would never understand why I was being a b***h to him in the second scene.”

Yes Eva we’re sure the tight shot of your tight ass was key to the plot and chracter development.

Latinos Think Shopping is Fun

12:08 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Money · Comments Off

25 Aug 2006

shopping%20bags.jpgSeems like consuming is a favorite hobby of Latinos. According to a recently released AC Nielsen study 26% of us go shopping to simply do something or occupy our time not because we actually need anything. And what do we end up buying on our entertaining shopping trips? Clothing of course! The study breaks down Latino shopping habits by nationality.

los mexicanos son los más predispuestos a comprar, aunque en realidad no requieran ningún artículo en particular, con un 21%. Le siguen los argentinos con 18%, los chilenos con 16% y en último lugar se ubican los brasileños con 13% de los encuestados.

RBD : Those Diablitos!

8:56 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Chile| Chismes| Music · 24 Comments

25 Aug 2006

grupo-rbd.jpgI told you all RBD was evil and now the vice-president of their Chilean fan club has proven it. According to Latina, Francisca Fabia says if you play backwards two songs off RBD’s latest album you too can hear “Satanic messages”.

Fabia claims the song “Rebelde” contains the lyrics, Ven y abrázame, demonio (”come and hug me, demon”), and that “Sálvame” says, El malo me lleva (”the bad one is taking me”).

Mira if you’re like me, listening to RBD is bad enough (to say nothing about watching the novela) so listening to their songs backwards has gotta be like a trip to hell and back. But seriously do young people in Chile need more activities in their life or que?

buchanan.jpgWhile Pat Buchanan makes the media rounds pimping his new book, Think Progress points how the his arguments really are the same rhetoric used over time in the United States against various immigrant groups.

Immigrants will dilute the white race:

If we do not get control of our borders, by 2050 Americans of European descent will be a minority in the nation their ancestors created and built. No nation has ever undergone so radical a demographic transformation and survived. [Buchanan, p. 11, 2006]

VERSUS

The number of purely white People in the World is proportionally very small…in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are Germans also, the Saxons only accepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. [Benjamin Franklin, 1751]

Whoever said racism isn’t part of the national character of the U.S. needs to read all the comparisons put out there. Sadly hate never dies, the rhetoric around it just changes ever so slightly.

Crossing the Border as a Tourist Attraction

8:40 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia| Immigration| mexico| travel · Comments Off

24 Aug 2006

border_fence.jpgThis is an example of adventure tourism gone bad and offensive. A nature park in the Mexican central state of Hidalgo is offering mock undocumented crossings of the U.S./Mexico border. That’s right, you too can run from a fake Border Patrol about 700 miles from the border for the low low price of 150 pesos — about $15 per person. According to the Austin American-Statesman:

Advertising… tells the pretend immigrants to “Make fun of the Border Patrol!” and to “Cross the Border as an Extreme Sport!” As craven as the advertising sounds, the organizers say they are trying to build empathy for migrants by putting people in their shoes. “We do this to show the people what it’s like, to make them more conscious,” said Hnahnu elder Luis Santiago Hernandez, who has crossed the genuine border more than five times.
