Latino parents are outraged at a Dallas public school’s attempt to limit how many Latino children were pictured in a brochure as part of their plan to attract whites to the institution. As if that weren’t enough, the parents are also accusing the school of employing racial segregation tactics, like keeping fluent English-speaking Latino children in ESL classes:
Latino parents at mostly Hispanic Preston Hollow Elementary School filed a federal lawsuit against principal Teresa Parker and the Dallas Independent School District in April. The suit alleges that Hispanic and black students were kept in English as a Second Language classes even when they tested out and that multiage courses with almost all white students were created.

Hugo,
Do you like me? Circle one: Yes No
Fidel
Ok that’s not really what the message was, but according to Venezuela’s president Hugo Chavez, he did get a message from the recuperating Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Chavez said that the letter said:
Dios ayuda a Chávez y a sus amigos.
Chavez replied:
Aww don’t you love leftist Latino leader love notes?

I remember seeing my first Pedro Almodóvar film and being transformed. Not by dramatism or genius photography, but by the keen insight he had into his culture and the wit and care with which he presented the characters — mostly women — in his works.
Pedro’s urban stories of impossible coincidences, shattered relationships and absurd predicaments made me fall in love not only with him but with the films’ backdrop: Spain. How many Americans’ first look into Spain was through the eyes of Almodóvar? For many, he was the first modern director of international acclaim to present Spain in a light we as Americans had never seen it before: modern, avant-garde, intellectual, urban, liberated.
Some people I knew had never seen a foreign film before seeing an Almodóvar movie. Others began to travel to Spain compelled in part by their love for the Madrid (real or imagined) that Almodóvar created in his films. I’m not sure what he’s done concretely for American tourism to Spain, but I can say that he’s a lot done as an ambassador (and critic) of his country abroad.

With the focus quicky shifting back to terrorism after the revelation of an alleged airplane bomb plot out of England, immgration activists are trying to keep the heat on. Yesterday the Metropolitan chapter of the National Immigration Coalition announced a mega march of immigrants to take place on September 7th in Washington D.C. So far over 40 organizations from all over the country have signed on to march, with the goal of having a million people participate.
