International left: Don’t mess with Cuba

5:34 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Latin America|Politics · Comments Off

7 Aug 2006

cuba-dr.jpgIntellectual luminaries from all sectors of society and from all over the world are getting together to tell the U.S. government one thing: stay out of Cuba. In an open letter to the United States government, the list of personalities reads like a whos-who of international thought leaders:

José Saramago, Portugal; Wole Soyinka, Nigeria; Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Argentina; Dario Fo, Italia; Desmond Tutu, Sudáfrica; Rigoberta Menchú, Guatemala; Nadine Gordimer, Sudáfrica; Zhores Alfiorov, Rusia; Noam Chomsky, EEUU; Oscar Niemeyer, Brasil;Harry Belafonte, EEUU; Mario Benedetti, Uruguay.

And that’s just the first paragraph…of about 20 more. I have my reservations about Prensa Latina as a news source, but this seems legit. Check out the whole list of signers.

b7bf15thalia140x235p.jpgThalia has got something to say about dressing for the summer heat:

Being from Mexico, I know how to stay cool. I have mastered looking cool and still fashionable. … The camisole is the basis. I need to feel fresh, be loose and open, see the skin of my arms and cleavage to feel cool. You can wear a camisole with all different bottoms.”

- Thalia, Latin singer and designer of Kmart’s Thalia Sodi Collection

Uh…okay….Thanks, Thalia.

Fidel Castro’s Hija Making the Rounds

Alina-Fernandez.jpgContrary to all the partying in the streets of Miami, Cuban president Fidel Castro is not dead. But his turning over power to his still publically invisible hermanito Raul has the media scrambling to create angles that will put them at the top of this hot button moment in Latin American history. CNN is arguably taking the lead by hiring Fidel’s own exiled daughter, Alina Fernandez, as a network contributor. Alina, who hosts a radio show in Miami and wrote a book about being the daughter of Fidel is quoted by USA Today as saying:

At this critical point in history as a Cuban, it’s important for me to draw the world’s attention to the situation inside Cuba, as we reflect on its future,” she said. “CNN is a global network, which can reach the largest population available.”

Mexican Elections : No Recount for You

8:19 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · mexico|Politics · Comments Off

7 Aug 2006

mexico03x200.jpgFor those inside and outside of Mexico hoping for a recount of the votes from the July 2nd presidential election, hope is dead. On Saturday Mexico’s top electoral court rejected Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s Democratic Revolution Party’s request for a recount. According to AP:

In Mexico’s central plaza, thousands of protesters watched the session on a huge screen, chanting “Vote by vote!” and drowning out the judges’ statements.

AMLO responded by telling the crowd:

For us, it’s very clear,” he said. “If they refuse a full recount, that’s proof that we won the presidential election…. They may have the money and the power, but we have what’s most important — the people’s support.

It’s very clear that the Mexican court’s decision will help keep alive the image of a corrupt Mexican electoral system with something to hide and that hurts all Mexicans, regardless of party affiliation.
