Uruguayan model dies on the catwalk

13:32 H | Topics: Fashion - Health - Uruguay

pasarela.jpgA few days back there was talk about whether Miss Universe's fainting spell after her coronation wasn't due to a lack of food. Apparently, that speculation isn't that far off the mark, as a model in Uruguay has apparently died on the catwalk after having starved herself for several days:

A young Uruguayan model died of heart failure while participating in a fashion show during Fashion Week in Montevideo (Uruguay), according to officials at the hotel where the show was held.

22 year-old Luisel Ramos felt ill after walking the catwalk, fainted on her way to the dressing room and died in spite of the medical attention she received from a mobile hospital unit, sources told EFE.
The doctors who treated her diagnosed her with heart failure.

The young woman's father told police that the model had gone several days without eating.

In Uruguay's close neighbor, Argentina, more and more women are struggling with body obsession. The United States leads the world in deaths caused by eating disorders, followed by Japan and Germany.

I am a 16 year old and am increasingly shocked and disgusted by this concept of size 0!!( UK 4)
I think fashion houses who promote this deathly skinny look should be ashamed as no healthy person, even a naturally skinny model, should be a size 4. I understand that there are naturally skinny people and they shouldn’t be condemned for being skinny, but the idea that models are being told to go and shed pound just to fit into the ridiculously tiny sample size clothes is absolutely horrendous!! There is no need for them to make clothes sooo small....What happened to celebrating a womens curves for God's sakes. However, my main concern is the affect that this attitude that 'skinny is sexy' is having on teenage girls my own age, who are increasingly being lured into this idea that 'FOOD IS EVIL!' What sort of image is the fashion industry and fashion magazines giving off by constantly reinforcing this idea of 'cult diets' and 'size 0' The fashion industry needs to take responsibility!!
