A few days back there was talk about whether Miss Universe’s fainting spell after her coronation wasn’t due to a lack of food. Apparently, that speculation isn’t that far off the mark, as a model in Uruguay has apparently died on the catwalk after having starved herself for several days:
A young Uruguayan model died of heart failure while participating in a fashion show during Fashion Week in Montevideo (Uruguay), according to officials at the hotel where the show was held.22 year-old Luisel Ramos felt ill after walking the catwalk, fainted on her way to the dressing room and died in spite of the medical attention she received from a mobile hospital unit, sources told EFE.
The doctors who treated her diagnosed her with heart failure. The young woman’s father told police that the model had gone several days without eating.
In Uruguay’s close neighbor, Argentina, more and more women are struggling with body obsession. The United States leads the world in deaths caused by eating disorders, followed by Japan and Germany.

Months ago we told you that JLo had been cast in the movie remake of the hit 70s TV drama Dallas. Well, that didn’t last long, as apparently Jenny abruptly left the set this week, never to return:
Dallas the TV series was the site of endless dramas, abrupt disappearances and untoward reappearances. Early evidence suggests that Dallas the motion picture will be no different after star Jennifer Lopez mysteriously bailed from the project this week.“She is out of Dallas,” confirmed Lopez’s representative Leslie Sloane Zelnick yesterday. Lopez had been due to play the boozy, woozy Sue Ellen opposite John Travolta (as JR). Other possible cast members include Luke Wilson (as Bobby) and Shirley MacLaine (as Miss Ellie).
The UK’s Guardian also reports that JLo isn’t the first casuality of this production, which also lost its original director earlier in the year.

It’s been over a months since the Mexican presidential elections and still there has been no clear answer to the popular cries of fraud just like there is still no clear official winner (even though Felipe Calderón and Andres Manuel López Obrador will each tell you that he is the winner). According to AlterNet there is…:
…a growing body of credible evidence from mainstream Mexican journalists, independent election observers and respected scholars indicates that an attempt was made to deliver the presidency to Calderón. It includes a pattern of irregularities at the polls, interference by the ruling party and some very suspicious statistical patterns in the “official” results.
It is because of this that supporters of both candidates have been calling for a ballot by ballot recount (which has yet to happen). By far AMLO’s supporters have been the loudest in demanding a recount with rallies continuing every weekend. Just this last weekend Mexican newspapers reported that two million supporters of López Obrador gathered in México City. AMLO said when there is a recount, he will stop calling rallies.

Traditionally Latinos are not thought about in terms of being on the cutting edge within the Information Technology (IT) field. Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association (LISTA) is trying to change that by giving props to those Latinos making strides in the IT world. According to a press release distributed Tuesday:
Alejandra Calatayud, general manager of the Small, Midmarket Solutions & Partners & East Region Emerging Markets at Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) , has been named recipient of the prestigious Corporate Citizen Achiever Award by LISTA (Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association) for her contributions to developing a pool of future Latino talent in the engineering and computer science fields.Calatayud’s work with Latino youth has been extensive. She was instrumental in LISTA’s recent launch of the L2 Initiative, which provides Latinos and members of other underserved communities with the opportunity to enter the information technology industry as members of a technical staff or as entrepreneurs. Microsoft has provided access to its New York headquarters to start training New York students and professionals looking to gain the skills to enter the IT field.
Vaya! I may not heart Microsoft but we need more Latinos and people of color in general in this growing area. Felicidades Alejandra and keep up the good work.
