daddy_yankee.jpgName: Daddy Yankee aka Raymond Ayala aka El Cangri

Age:29

Occupation:Reggaeton recording artist, business man, actor, radio host

Place of Residence:
Puerto Rico

Bio:From Daddy Yankee’s Website and Wikipedia: Raymond Ayala was born and raised in Las Lamas and Villa Kennedy barrios of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Since the early 1990′s Daddy Yankee worked alongside DJ Playero in P.R. rapping and making music in the genre that would blow up to become reggaeton, that is both loved and hated. Living in the Rican barrio ain’t never been easy and young Raymond did what he had to to survive. When he was shot in the leg between the ages of 16-17 in the hood, he decided to dedicate his life to music. He helped pushed the once undergorund/Rican-centric music into the mainstream and even crossover. He is the first reggaeton artsita to go platinum and international. This thanks in part to the single Gasolina from his 2004 album Barrio Fino. To date he has appeared in over 70 albums, is starring in a movie, is launching his own clothing line, and hosts a syndicated radio show.

Shakira performs for 4000 in Croatia

6:29 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|World · 1 Comment

19 Jul 2006

HP_Pavilion_Concert_Floor_1.JPGTelemundo’s Cotorreando reported today that Shakira’s concert in Croatia was a huge flop, with only 4000 people in attendance of the expected 20,000. Some blame concert promoters for bad marketing of the events, while other cite the fact that the tickets — priced at $56, according to Cotorreando — were well out of the price range for fans in a country like Croatia.

Spain’s EFE via Mexico’s El Universal reports that a lot more was lost on this concert than just money:

Owners of Luna Promotions, the company responsible for the event, are pulling their hair out over a loss 320,000 euros.

Aside from suffering one of the few failures of her career, Shakira is sad because the one who loses the most is a child who has a kidney illness. Part of the profits from the show were to go to his medical treatment.

Does this mean the child won’t receive treatment now? I felt bad for Shakira when I saw the tape, but being “sad” probably isn’t going to help much. Why not shell out the 320K for the kid? I mean, she was just named one of the richest latinas, with a fortune of 66 million dollars.

Gael Garcia Bernal is Breaking my Heart

10:53 am By Maegan La Mala · Argentina|Celebrities|Chismes · Comments Off

19 Jul 2006

gael_garcia_bernal.jpgIf the rumores coming out of Argentina are true, then I am heartbroken. According to QuePasa Mexican actor (and hottie) Gael Garcia Bernal could be planning to walk down the aisle with Argentina’s Dolores Fonzi.

Garcia Bernal and Fonzi met in 2001 when he arrived in Buenos Aires to shoot “Vidas privadas”, first work of Argentinian singer Fito Paez. Last year, the star of “Y Tu Mama Tambien” was a guest star of the TV series “Soy tu fan”, starring Fonzi, and in which both of them lived a romance that seemed to have gone a little further than screen performances.

Well if the rumores are true don’t expect me to be throwing rice at the nuptuals. You’ll find me pouting along with Natalie Portman, Gael’s ex who interestingly enough happens to be in Argentina as well.

He is also a radical critic of neoliberal globalization and United States foreign policy. Some foreign governments view Chávez as a threat to global oil prices and regional stability, while others welcome his bilateral trade and reciprocal aid agreements.

Remembering Julia

9:21 pm By Maegan La Mala · literature|New York City|Puerto Rico|Women · Comments Off

18 Jul 2006

WF-julia-de-burgos-1.jpgIn the larger literary community not much is known about Puerto Rican poetry. Much less is known about the island’s female poets. One of these talented mujeres was Julia de Burgos. An artist and a community want to make sure that the legacy of the Carolina born poeta stays alive. According to Virtual Boricua:

An historic community dialogue and presentation was held on June 6, 2006 in East Harlem to discuss plans for a mosaic honoring the late Julia de Burgos to be designed and installed by artist Manny Vega alongside a Hope Community building located on the northeast corner of Lexington Avenue and 106th Street. The “Remembering Julia” Mosaic Project seeks to support the work initiated by Councilwomen Mark-Viverito and El Museo de Barrio to rename East 106th Street in honor of Julia De Burgos.

There will be a benefit at the end of this month to support the initiative. For more information visit Virtual Boricua.

fidel_castro_6.jpgName: Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz

Age: 79

Occupation: President of Cuba

Place of Residence: La Habana, Cuba

He was the third child born to Ángel Castro y Argiz, a Spanish immigrant who became relatively prosperous through hard work in the sugar industry and shrewd investments.”

As we all know, the rest is history. From these seemingly modest beginnings, Castro rose to power in the island of Cuba. Depending on whom you ask, this marks either a very bad or a very glorious moment in history. Enough said.

Daddy Yankee suing his PR gal

12:24 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|PR · 7 Comments

18 Jul 2006

daddy_092905.jpgFollowing in footsteps of fellow Rican JLo, Daddy Yankee is going to court to sue his former publicist for allegedly duping him out of over 30 thousand big ones. According to People en Español, he loaned her money and never got it back, so he and his wife are taking it before the tribunales.

The publicist isn’t making any comments about the controversy except to say that it’s Daddy who owes her the money, telling another magazine: “I’m not going to make comments and will wait until the case gets to the appropriate forum.” Meaning court, I guess.

Anyway, if this means Daddy Yankee is in need of new publicist, I think I know someone who wouldn’t mind having him as a client.
