Earlier this month we wrote about how Latinos, including Eva Longoria, were nowhere to be found on the Emmy nominee roster. Seems the desperate ama de casa is so pissed off at the snub that she is boycotting the Emmy Awards ceremony. This is the second year in a row that the Texican has been passed over.

In Arizona, a state that’s home to more than one million Latinos, a firestorm is brewing over the placement of a billboard off of Tucson’s Interstate 10 which proclaims: “Stop the Invasion, Secure Our Borders”.
The billboard, was placed by a group called Grassfire.org, an organization that claims its mission “is to impact key issues in our nation by equipping hundreds of thousands of citizens with tools that give our partners a real impact on issues.”
Steve Elliott, president of grassfire.org says, “I think those six words express the sentiment of literally millions of people and I would say the vast majority of people in Tucson.”Grassfire raised roughly $150,000 to put 12 of the billboards in 7 states.

According to a post up on Feministing yesterday, violence against women in Peru has reached epidemic proportions. In some parts of the nation well over half the women report being abused physically and/or sexually. Some of the causes are related to poverty and a justice system that does not punish offenders.
Sexual violence against women in Peru is now so bad that Peru’s President-elect Alan Garcia, who takes office Friday, made it one of his central campaign issues and has vowed to tackle the problem and give women a greater say in government.
Too bad it takes so many women being hurt to make a head of state take notice. Let’s see if Alan Garcia will be all talk.

Last month we told youthat Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and Texan actor Matthew McConaughey had split. At that time, the couple cited pressures caused by having a long-distance relationship as the key factor influencing their break-up. Now, Matthew is saying that the pressure was of an entirely different kind: it was Penelope pressuring him to get married. According to LaBotana.com:
According to online magazine Famapop, the reason for the breakup between Spanish actress Penélope Cruz and actor Matthew McConaughey, was the pressure that “Pé” put on him to talk about wedding plans.Matt said in a recent interview that he wasn’t ready to take that big step, meanwhile Cruz told the press in her country that her greatest desire was to get married and have a family.
It’s nice to know that Hollywood men are just like ordinary men. They hear the word “marriage” and run for the hills.

Just in case the war in Lebanon and Miss. Puerto Rico becoming Miss Universe distracted you, AlterNet reminds people that the immigration issue is far from dead by exposing some lies surrounding the issue and setting them straight. The Six Immigration Lies, Dispelled are:
1. Immigrants are not animals
2. Neither are they terrorists
3. Tent cities at the border would be 21st-century concentration camps.
4. There’s no invasion
5. They speak English, just not “English only.”
6. They do not drain public coffers
These are all things that we have written about before, but they are worth repeating.
