Juanes gets knighted in France

juanes.jpgThe man who a lot of women consider their ideal knight in shining armor has been knighted in the true sense. Colombian rockero Juanes received earlier this week one of France’s highest honors, becoming “Knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters”, awarded him by the Ministry of Culture and Art.

He may be a knight, but he’s not getting all big-headed about it:

True to his humble nature, Juanes shared that he was surprised to be getting the decoration. “I am just a musician who enjoys what he does, and a Colombian who dreams and fights for peace in his country, nothing more,” the star said.

France has bestowed this award upon Juanes because of his “significant contributions to the arts.”

I think it’s pretty amazing that an artist receive this decoration so (relatively) early in his career, and this goes to show that you don’t have to sing in English to “cross over”.

Spanish Prime Minister Takes Sides in Mid-East Conflict

zapatero.jpgAs the conflict between Israel and Lebanon continues to escalate, one Spanish Prime Minister is making his position on the situation known and is taking some heat for it. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was recently photographed wearing a Palestinian scarf. This combined with his comments that Israel is using “abusive force which does not allow innocent human beings to defend themselves” has people calling the Socialist prime minister an anti-Semite. It certainly is a complex history that Israel has with its neighbors, however doesn’t it seem that whenever anyone criticizes Israel they are called an anti-Semite?

Since the early 1990’s Daddy Yankee worked alongside DJ Playero in P.R. rapping and making music in the genre that would blow up to become reggaeton, that is both loved and hated. Living in the Rican barrio ain’t never been easy and young Raymond did what he had to to survive. When he was shot in the leg between the ages of 16-17 in the hood, he decided to dedicate his life to music. He helped pushed the once undergorund/Rican-centric music into the mainstream and even crossover. He is the first reggaeton artsita to go platinum and international. This thanks in part to the single Gasolina from his 2004 album Barrio Fino. To date he has appeared in over 70 albums, is starring in a movie, is launching his own clothing line, and hosts a syndicated radio show.
