WF-julia-de-burgos-1.jpgIn the larger literary community not much is known about Puerto Rican poetry. Much less is known about the island’s female poets. One of these talented mujeres was Julia de Burgos. An artist and a community want to make sure that the legacy of the Carolina born poeta stays alive. According to Virtual Boricua:

An historic community dialogue and presentation was held on June 6, 2006 in East Harlem to discuss plans for a mosaic honoring the late Julia de Burgos to be designed and installed by artist Manny Vega alongside a Hope Community building located on the northeast corner of Lexington Avenue and 106th Street. The “Remembering Julia” Mosaic Project seeks to support the work initiated by Councilwomen Mark-Viverito and El Museo de Barrio to rename East 106th Street in honor of Julia De Burgos.

There will be a benefit at the end of this month to support the initiative. For more information visit Virtual Boricua.

fidel_castro_6.jpgName: Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz

Age: 79

Occupation: President of Cuba

Place of Residence: La Habana, Cuba

Bio: From Wikipedia: “Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was born on a sugar plantation in Birán, near Mayarí, in the modern-day province of Holguín – then a part of the now-defunct Oriente province. He was the third child born to Ángel Castro y Argiz, a Spanish immigrant who became relatively prosperous through hard work in the sugar industry and shrewd investments.”

As we all know, the rest is history. From these seemingly modest beginnings, Castro rose to power in the island of Cuba. Depending on whom you ask, this marks either a very bad or a very glorious moment in history. Enough said.

Daddy Yankee suing his PR gal

daddy_092905.jpgFollowing in footsteps of fellow Rican JLo, Daddy Yankee is going to court to sue his former publicist for allegedly duping him out of over 30 thousand big ones. According to People en Español, he loaned her money and never got it back, so he and his wife are taking it before the tribunales.

The publicist isn’t making any comments about the controversy except to say that it’s Daddy who owes her the money, telling another magazine: “I’m not going to make comments and will wait until the case gets to the appropriate forum.” Meaning court, I guess.

Anyway, if this means Daddy Yankee is in need of new publicist, I think I know someone who wouldn’t mind having him as a client.
