Spanish-speaking prisoners in Utah are up in arms because they’ve been robbed of something vital to their peace of mind: Univision telenovelas.
An outburst among inmates over a decision to pull the plug on steamy Spanish-language soaps and talk shows resulted in a lockdown at Logan’s Cache County Jail. After getting numerous complaints about the raunchy shows and inmates hogging the television, jail commanders decided Tuesday to pull the Spanish-language TV channel Univision from the cable line-up pumped into the jail’s 15 common area TVs.
“It was dividing the inmates,” said Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Locke. “Some wanted to watch it, some didn’t want to watch it and it just got worse and worse and it all came back to that channel.”

It’s nothing personal. I just really dislike bubble gum pop music in any language, especially when it’s not just a band but a television show and a concert and a magazine. I should have seen it coming. The warning signs were all there, like when I was at a party on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and this guy from Israel was singing RBD songs. But there is a whole new level of cred that comes with making it in the New York Times and that day has come. According to the Times:
RBD (known by the Spanish pronounciation, “erre beh deh”), a photogenic Mexican sextet that started out as a soap opera spin-off but now rules the world of Latin pop with feel-good teen anthems and Las Vegas-style concert productions. Yet the group remains all but unknown among English speakers, a problem its members are hoping to solve by recording their first English-language album. Due this fall, the album is being aimed at non-Latinos in the United States, as well as markets in Canada and even Asia.
I can barely handle them in Spanish. Now I have to look forward to them in English?

Hey, all you haters who think Thalia is talentless, you better shut your mouths because she’s sold more records than most legit performers. Thalia was just awarded a diamond record by her label, EMI, for having sold 10 million albums.
The award was presented by her label EMI Music, in Miami before record industry personalities. The singer, accompanied by her husband Tommy Mottola and blue-eyed Carlos Ponce, among others, dedicated her success to her mother and to producer Emilio Estefan.
Maybe recognizing la Thalis‘ accomplishment will win me some favor in the eyes of all of the Thalia fans who attacked me for writing this post.

I’m tired of mainstream hip hop’s obsession with culo, cash, and cadenas so I got hyped when I read about out and about gay rapper Deadlee over at Latino LA. According to Latino LA’s Camilo Arenivar:
Deadlee, who is one-fourth black and three-quarter Mexican, is experiencing rising popularity as a result of his work in the documentary and a heavy push on MySpace, Gay Media and being featured in LOGO’s Hip Hop Homos. He recently received interest from MTV and The L Word. His performance in the film has been noted in the straight rap magazine URB and in articles in the NY Daily News as well as other sources. In June, He had a full page photo in the Nation’s number one Gay and Lesbian magazine, The Advocate.
VivirLatino is a daily publication published by Mamita Mala Media, dedicated to featuring all the latest politics, culture, entertainment of interest to the diverse Latin@ diaspora.
