Dead or alive, the United States government is making big plans for what will happen in Cuba after Fidel Castro. On Monday, in a meeting led by Secretary of State Condoleeza Rica and Cuban exile Commerce Secretary, Carlos GutiĆ©rrez, it was announced that the U.S. could “rehabilitate” a post-Castro Cuba in 18 months, as long as the transition government was willing to faciliate a democratic change. Hmmmm why does this sound so familiar? Oh yeah now I remember it’s the same lines that were and continue to be given to defend the occupation of Iraq. But wait, it gets better.

The mobilization called for by Mexico’s leftist presidential candidate last week will begin as planned today, reports Forbes:
Supporters of leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador headed to Mexico City on Wednesday, leaving mountain towns and sprawling industrial cities to demand a ballot-by-ballot recount.Protesters gathered outside the country’s 300 electoral districts before heading to the capital, where a mass rally is planned for Sunday to denounce official results showing conservative Felipe Calderon as the apparent winner of the July 2 election.

I guess those of us who like to think of the City by the Bay as the real City of Brotherly Love and a utopic bubble of tolerance will have to think again, in light of a recent hate crime against a Latino youth. This happened blocks from my home, and the crime is even more disturbing in that it was perpetrated by a group of Asian youths who yelled racial slurs as they beat the kid unconscious.
Back in May we posted that hate crimes against Latinos were on the rise, and that this was tied to the immigration debate. I never thought I’d see it happen in my own backyard, an immigrant enclave par excellence. In the years I’ve been around San Francisco, I’ve seen the number of Latino immigrants working in Chinatown businesses grow significantly, and how suddenly some shops were stocking calling cards for Mexico as a result of this influx. I’m not sure if this particular attack could be linked to immigration, but the irony of this happening in a neighborhood like Chinatown is not lost on me.
Details around this case are sketchy (the media doesn’t tend to cover hate crimes against any group with much willingness) but what is known is that the teens have been arrested and the victim has been released from the hospital.

Undocumented immigrants may want to stay clear of Colorado, or leave if they are already there in light of a deal made between Republican Gov. Bill Owens and Democratic legislatures that would deny basic federal services such as health insurance and services for the elderly to undocumented immigrants. Under the agreement, millions who currently get such aid would be required to prove their citizenship. About 50 million undocumented immigrants could potentially be impacted by the deal. The scary part is that this plan was a compromise deal that doesn’t include an anti-immigrant referendum in November, which is what Owens and his legislature pals wanted.
