10 Jul 2006Colombian rockero Juanes is retiring, but don’t start crying yet. The performer says the hiatus will only be temporary. He’s been on the road too long, so he’ll be taking a year-long break to rest at his home in Medellín:
“I’ll devote more time to my family, many more hours in the studio and I also need to work more on the objectives laid out by my Mi Sangre foundation,” the singer told Globovision.com. Juanes hit it big with his album Mi sangre which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide since it was released in 2004 and has been the number one hit in 32 countries.
According to People en Español, Juanes will also be dedicating some time to a hobby he feels passionate about: gardening.

Saturday was a big day in Mexico City. As promised, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the “defeated” candidate for the presidency of the Mexican republic is anything but defeated as he managed to organize half a million Mexicans in the city’s main plaza, el Zócalo, to support the cause of refuting the results of the recent elections.
Once again, Mexican author Elena Poniatowska documents the event first hand in an editorial for Mexican daily La Jornada, reflecting on AMLO’s power to make everyone present feel as if they were visiting with a friend:
“El Zócalo is Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s living room. He asks, of more than 500,000 men and women of every age, “How about Wednesday at six?” and they respond “yes”, raise one hand in unison and shake it in the air. “Here, here I am. It’s me, look at me.” They feel recognized. The intimacy with AMLO covers the whole plaza.

Xispas today that breaks down the myth of Aztlan and challenges the right wing pundits who like to instill fear by conjuring images of Mexicans and Chicanos taking over parts of the United States. Luis J. Rodriguez does an excellent job of putting Aztlan into a historical context that should be required reading for all, but especially for those who use Aztlan as a fear and race baiting tactic. Seriously someone needs to email this to Lou Dobbs.

10 Jul 2006You’re gonna tell me that the Colombiana Shakira wasn’t lip Lip synching (Wycleff too)? Shaki’s perfromance was set to be the highlight of the Copa Mundial closing ceremonies but the sound was so bad (at least on the Univision broadcast I was watching)and the stage in the middle of all of those sweeping stairs made the already tiny singer look even smaller. Even though I wasn’t down with either France or Italy, I watched the final game. Felicidades Italia who in my opinon should have automatically won after Zinédine Zidane decided that an Italian player’s chest was a good target for his head.
