Mexican elections: a real-life telenovela

Like Mala reported, it’s hard to tell what’s going on with the Mexican elections by looking at mainstream U.S. press. I turned to my RSS feed of Mexican headlines on the topic and not only is it confusing, it’s sooo dramatic.

06festejo1.jpg Here are just a few of today headlines in Mexican daily La Jornada:

The PREP is dead

Respect our vote, demand citizens outside IFE headquarters

The PREP ignored thousands of votes

This fraud is more sophisticated than the one of 1988, says EZLN

Calderon warns that he won’t accept more ballot packages be opened

The spectre of the ‘88 fraud haunts IFE and undermines its credibility

Anomalies appearing all over the country

Meanwhile, according to El Universal, conservative Felipe Calderón and supporters preparing his victory celebration but will wait for authorities to declare him the winner. To look at the photo seen here you’d think it had already been declared.

In light of how the calculations are looking: (currently 33.33% for AMLO and 35.86% for Calderón with 99.88% polling places counted) López Obrador says he will challenge the results and is demanding a vote by vote recount. He also spoke to the triumphant air of the PAN and alludes to their participation in the voting “fraud”:

“I was watching TV yesterday and the truth is that they know very well that they have nothing to celebrate, it all looked very forced, there was no joy or certaintly because they know what they did.”

This ain’t over yet, folks. AMLO is also calling for his supporters to gather this weekend in Mexico City’s Zócalo — Mexico’s protest place par excellence — to protest the outcome should the PAN be declared victorious.
