150748864_a585420b74_m.jpgWe all knew that Mamita Mala (otherwise known as VL’s very own Maegan Ortiz) was hot, but it was high time we got some third party validation. Well, folks, that day has come, as la Mala herself has been chosen as one of the REAL hot 100.

The REAL hot 100 is:

The REAL hot 100 is a list featuring young women from around the country who are breaking barriers, fighting stereotypes, and making a difference in their communities or the nation.

This project will not only combat the popular notion that all young women have to offer is their ability to appeal to men, but it will also highlight the important — but often overlooked — work young women are doing.

That’s right, folks. Being “hot” goes way beyond the surface and our Mala is all that and a bag-o-papas. From the REAL hot 100 site:

Who is she?

Maegan Elizabeth Ortiz aka “la Mala”, 28, Rego Park, NY

mercenaries.jpgVenezuelan vice president Jose Rangel is expressing his ire over a video game which he says proves that the United States is looking to invade his country and take possession of its oil supply:

The game, “Mercenaries 2: World in Flames” only comes out next year but Venezuela’s Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel has already expressed anger — at the US government.

“This shows the perversion of North American society, its government,” said Rangel on Wednesday, calling
President George W. Bush’s administration “a government of gangsters, drug traffickers and criminals”.

According to Agence France-Presse, the game depicts characters who look like Hollywood action figures invading areas that look very similar to Caracas and taking possession of oil facilities that bear a striking resemblance to those of Venezuela.

Hot Tamales Brings Funny Mujeres to NYC

9:17 am By Maegan La Mala · Events|New York City|Women · Comments Off

23 Jun 2006

Kiki.jpgLast night I had the privilegio of being at the opening night of the limited NYC run of Hot Tamales Live and yes it was very caliente. This comedic variety show opened up with a trio of Brazilian dancers, perfect to celebrate Brazil’s victory over Japan in the Copa Mundial yesterday. Their outfits made many of the men in the audience happy too. The theme of the show was East Meets West, because it brought comics from both coasts together at the Times Square Laugh Factory. Kiki Melendez(pictured) hosted and created the event.

Chavez lashes out against the U.S. and Peru

5:47 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Politics|Venezuela · 1 Comment

22 Jun 2006

2921.jpgVenezuelan president Hugo Chavez isn’t too pleased about the U.S.’s recent moves to block his country from the U.N. security council. Venezuela’s El Universal quoted his latest broadcast address in response to the move:

“Venezuela is going to pull out all the stops. It is David against Goliath. We do not care. Let the empire show its claws. We trust in the courage and dignity of the governments worldwide. I denounce that the United States government has started waging a world campaign against Venezuela, in an attempt at preventing Venezuela from being elected democratically as a member of the (UN) Security Council by countries around the world.”

Sergio Andrade is back

5:00 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Controversia · 1 Comment

22 Jun 2006

0426_en_wr_sergio_andrade_s.jpgRemember Sergio Andrade, Gloria Trevi’s creepy husband/manager who went to jail on charges of kidnapping, assault, et al? Just when we thought we had seen the last of him, he’s back with a book of poems and a new album. According to People en Español:

In an interview with the newspaper Reforma, Andrade revealed that during his time in prision he took refuge in literature. “In jail, the loneliness, the isolation and the distance put you in a situation of physical and emotional darkness that is such that, if you don’t make an effort to bring out the light you have on the inside, there is no way of surviving”, he said, adding that he still suffers from depression after the long and turbulent years he went through and that ended with him in a Chihuahua prison.

Andrade’s new book of poems is called Crónicas de la misma historia and his new album Las cuentas claras.

Meanwhile, Gloria herself seems to have recuperated quite well, has been touring and most recently appeared on the Nuestro Himno recording.

Maria Celeste On Today Show Tomorrow

12:07 pm By Maegan La Mala · TV · 1 Comment

22 Jun 2006

arraras1NT_.jpgHaving NBC buy the station where you host a television show has its benefits. That’s what Maria Celeste Arraras is learning now that the Telemundo Al Rojo Vivo hostess will guest co-host on the Today show tomorrow June 23. She will presenting segments between the 9 to 10 AM time slot. Maria Celeste is no stranger to NBC.

She has been an occasional contributing correspondent for both Today and Dateline. She was also co-host for the most recent Black-Brown Democratic Presidential Debate in Iowa for MSNBC.

My work schedule doesn’t allow me to watch the sordid stories on Al Rojo Vivo, so I look forward to seeing Maria Celeste represent on network T.V. in the morning.

hottamalesliveny_1.jpgLiving in a female dominated familia, I know first hand that there is nothing scarier or funnier than a Latina mujer, that’s why I’m looking forward to checking out Hot Tamales Live tonight at the Laugh Factory. Hot Tamales Live is a comedy variety show produced by Eva Longoria, Kiki Melendez and Maria Bravo. That’s right, Ms. Desperate ama de casa has her hand in this but don’t think this is something new for her. Hot Tamales live has been selling out over in Los Angeles since 2002 and has been credited with helping hone her comic acting skills.

quijote.jpgThinking of heading out to the library to pick up a couple of books en español? According to AP, if you live in Gwinnett County, Georgia, think again. The library system in the heavily Latino county has decided it won’t be purchasing any more non-children’s books in the language of Cervantes:

Last week, the library board in this fast-growing county of 700,000 people eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. It offered no explanation, but the chairman said such book purchases would lead readers of other foreign languages to demand the same treatment.

I can see it now. All those French residents of this Georgia county taking to the streets to demand original versions of the works of Baudelaire and Victor Hugo.

“We can’t supply pleasure reading material for all language groups, so we’re not going to go down that road,” said Lloyd Breck, chairman of the library board.

I guess Tiziano Ferro and his handlers knew that saying sorry for statements against Mexican women wasn’t going to cut it, so the Italian pop star paid a visit to the Mexican consulate in Milan to “make peace” with Mexico vis a vis the Consul.

Is shaking hands and smiling for a photo going to do it? Next time we see him he’s gonna be dressed like a charro and singing el himno nacional.
