With the Mexican elections just a few weeks away, the campaign to get voters out to the polling places — especially young voters — is heating up. “Tu Rock es votar”, an organization whose mission is to do just that has created a pretty compelling campaign online, on TV, on the radio and in print which relies on the power of celebrities to encourage young people to get out and vote. The tagline: “Si no votas, cállate” (If you don’t vote, shut up). The tagline is the main part of a larger message which says: “We all complain…how many of us vote? If you don’t vote, shut up. On July 2nd, don’t let anyone decide for you”.

13 Jun 2006Does your mouth water at the idea of a succulent Philly Cheesesteak sandwich? Maybe you’ve been to Philadelphia’s famed eatery Geno’s and had one there. Next time you go, keep in mind that your English better be up to par if you want to order yourself one of these puppies:
A sign in a landmark Philadelphia restaurant asking customers to order in English is sparking controversy in the metropolis known as the “City of Brotherly Love.”
The owner of Geno’s Steaks said on Thursday that the sign, “This is America — when ordering speak English,” is intended to encourage immigrants to learn the language and assimilate into U.S. society, but one Latino activist said it’s racist.
First of all, I’ve never seen a Spanish speaker expect a non-Spanish speaker to understand what he’s saying — I see them struggling with the little English they know. That said, is this sign a reaction to the fact that Spanish-speaking customers are communicating with Spanish-speaking employees in their native language? Sorry, but you can’t restrict that.

If Gael Garcia Bernal is going to be in Buenos Aires in July then that’s where I wanna be too. People in Espanol is reporting that the Mexican actor will be returning to Argentina, where he filmed The Motorcycle Diaries, to film a movie titled El pasado, based on a novel by Alan Pauls and directed by Héctor Barbenco. It hasn’t been decided what lucky mujer will play opposite Gael in this film. According to producer Óscar Kramer:
Todas quieren actuar con Gael, es un imán. Pero es un papel muy complejo y hay que saber elegir bien.
Of course everyone wants to play opposite Gael. He’s talented and sexy. I wonder if there’s any chance they would consider a Nuyorican with no acting experience?

Rosie Perez’s inspiration for her documentary, Yo Soy Boricua, Pa’que Tu Lo Sepas, may have stemmed from frustration at having to explain her roots, but she sure as hell gave a good explanation. The hour and a half documentary aired last night on the IFC Channel and I was able to watch it, with my immediate Rican family and even gave my 8 year old daughter permission to stay up past her bedtime to watch it. After it was over she turned to me and said, “It’s good to be Puerto Rican”.
