shakira-the-cure-highlight-french-show.jpgShakira’s English-language hit “Hips Don’t Lie” became the most played song in pop history earlier this week, according to Nielsen. Via Top-40Charts.com:

“Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean became the most played song in pop radio history TODAY according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. The song was played more times in the week ending 6/4/06 beating out the previous record by Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” made in the week ending 6/5/05. Shakira’s song’s total of 9,657 times played on the radio, broke Stefani’s previous record of 9,582.

Now I realize why I am starting to hate this song. I really liked it at first, but like anything else, and as they say on beer commercials “nada con exceso…todo con medida“.

In addition to boasting the most played song in history, Shakira

…also recently became the first artist in the history of the charts to earn the coveted No 1 Top 40 Mainstream song and No 1 Latin song in the same week and still holds the No 1 spot on the Latin chart.

Quite an accomplishment.

Powell: no perfect wall

link.powell.jpgSpeaking at a conference in Mexico City, former Secretary of State Colin Powell recognized that building a wall between Mexico and the United States is not the answer to the nation’s immigration “problem”:

“The Berlin Wall did not work perfectly and the wall that the Israelis are putting up is not going to work perfectly,” Powell said. “So, a wall alone is not the answer.”

The Berlin Wall didn’t work “perfectly”? The wall their building in Israel won’t work “perfectly”? Is he kidding? These walls are symbols of oppression, not a less-than-perfect experiment.

Powell also said that immigrants should be given the chance to earn status:

He said U.S. authorities should let many of the estimated 12 million undocumented migrants already in America earn some form of legal status through expanded temporary-worker programs.

“We have to find a way for them to live in dignity and not in fear,” he said.

mascot2_m.jpgIt’s on! A short time ago the 2006 FIFA World Cup was officially opened. German uber-model Claudia Schiffer and futbol legend Pele opened the Mundial carrying the golden World Cup. This was follwed by a parade of the countries who have won World Cups into the Munich stadium. A catchy musical performance followed featuring German singer Herbert Gronemeyer and African duo Amadou & Mariam.

Now we are officially into the first game of the Copa Mundial with Costa Rica facing the home country team of Germany. Not even 18 minutes into the first half, we have Germany ahead 2-1. Germany scored a golaso within the first three minutes. If what I’m watching now is any indication, this is going to be an amazing Copa Mundial. I need to go grab a beer. This is good.

Keep track of what’s going on with the Copa at the official FIFA World Cup Website.
