The (Not so Live) ALMA Awards

The National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) ALMA Awards airs tonight on ABC at 9:30 pm (8:30 pm) central. This event was taped a few weeks ago so there should be no surprises. The event was hosted by Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria and featured performances by Paulina Rubio, Gloria Estefan and others. Marc Anthony was given a special Celia Cruz Award. The ALMAs were created, according to the official ALMA website :
…to honor outstanding Latino artistic achievement in television, film, and music and the enhancement of the Latino image in the entertainment industry.
Because nothing enhances the image of Latinos in entertainment like having a group of Latina (is Carmen Electra even Latina?) women dancing around on stage half naked during the opening act.
I will be posting my comments regarding the actual telecast in real time tonight. So stay tuned.

Carmen Electra is NOT Latina. Prince gave her that name cause it sounded Latina and, therefore, sexy. Her real name is Tara Patrick. Is she there cause her husband’s Dave Navarro???

Latina in stage-name only?
Perhaps the network pressured ALMA to “whiten up” so as not to scare Anglos with so many brown folks on TV.

I actually knew that Carmen Electra isn’t Latina – I was being sarcastic. Most people assume that all Carmens are latina.
I don’t know if being a Latina through marriage works for me nor does having a Latina stage name. What part of Latin America does “Electra” come from anyway?
