Newsweek has a piece on the availability of opportunities to immigrants in Mexico; a piece that in tone seems to allude to some level of hypocrisy on the part of the Mexican government:
If Arnold Schwarzenegger had migrated to Mexico instead of the United States, he couldn’t be a governor. If Argentina native Sergio Villanueva, firefighter hero of the Sept. 11 attacks, had moved to Tecate instead of New York, he wouldn’t have been allowed on the force.Even as Mexico presses the United States to grant unrestricted citizenship to millions of undocumented Mexican migrants, its officials at times calling U.S. policies “xenophobic,” Mexico places daunting limitations on anyone born outside its territory.
In the United States, only two posts — the presidency and vice presidency — are reserved for the native born.
In Mexico, non-natives are banned from those and thousands of other jobs, even if they are legal, naturalized citizens.
To be fair, this is no revelation and Mexico is not the only country that imposes this rule.

Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz has split from her boyfriend Texas sex symbol Matthew McConaughey, reports People Magazine:
Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz have decided to spend time apart, PEOPLE has learned exclusively. The couple “have decided to take time off as a couple. Due to busy work schedules and so much time apart, they mutually decided four weeks ago that separating was the best thing to do at this time,” according to a joint statement from the couple to PEOPLE.
“They’re very good friends, but they haven’t been able to be together,” a source close to Cruz tells PEOPLE. “Who knows what the future holds.”
The biggest factor influencing the break appears to be the fact that the couple saw each other very infrequently:
(Penelope) said it has been too hard to have a relationship when you see the other person every six weeks,” adds the source. The couple last saw each other in February when McConaughey visited Cruz on location in Spain.
What’s that saying? “Amor de lejos es amor de pendejos”. These guys seem to have figured that out.

The City of New York wants to make sure that undocumented immigrants who access its public hospitals feel safe. NYC has been distributing a letter in 11 languages that…:
…promises that public hospital employees will “keep confidential all information regarding your immigration status.” If workers reveal the information, they could lose their jobs, Health and Hospitals Corporation president Alan Aviles writes in the note.
The letter was sent out after a report from local advocates stated that many undocumented immigrants were not seeking medical care because of fear of deportation.
In one case, Aviles said Tuesday, a mother of three from Mexico refused to seek treatment for cervical cancer until an advocacy group intervened.
One can only hope that other city agencies will follow through and make sure that people’s human rights are not violated regardless of their immigration status.

The Latina Lost star was released last Thursday after serving a tiny portion of her 60 day jail sentence for violating her probation by driving under the influence in Hawaii late last year. According to People en Espanol, Michelle Rodriguez actually spent a total of 4 hours and 20 minutes incarcerated. The reason for her release? Overcrowding in the Los Angeles jail system which forced the release of non-violent offenders. Michelle is still required to perform 30 days of community service and will be under probation for 2 years. And where did the star go to celebrate her early release? A bar – of course.
