vargas_t.jpgThe National Organization for Women (NOW) and other organizations aren’t so sure that Elizabeth Vargas, the Latina co-anchor of ABC’s World News Tonight, is leaving of her own free will. Vargas anchored her last newscast last Friday just as she prepares to give birth to her second child. Kim Gandy, president of NOW said:

It seems unlikely to me, having survived and thrived through her first pregnancy, that she would logically give up the top job in TV a few months out, anticipating she couldn’t handle it. It just doesn’t strike me as a logical explanation. I don’t think there are too many men who would be happy to be removed from the anchor chair.

While Elizabeth Vargas is sure that the women’s organizations mean well she stated that:

I don’t think there are a lot of lessons to be drawn from my example because this is a unique job. You can’t leave the audience wondering who’s in charge for weeks or months, and you can’t not give 150 percent to a staff and a team who are so enormously dedicated.

Vargas will be replaced by Charles Gibson but she will continue to be co-anchor of the weekly newsmagazine 20/20.
