Too much stuff to talk about so we might as well round it up:jlo_ojaninoa.jpg

JLo’s is in court trying to make sure a tell-all book about her vida sexual by ex-husband Ojani Noa doesn’t get published.

“Sadly, no personal detail is too sacred to be sold by Noa for profit,” state the papers filed by Lopez’s attorney, Paul N. Sorrell, according to the Associated Press. “Noa will do anything within his power to make money off his ex-wife. He is out of control.”

Pobrecitos, Argentina lost to Germany in the World Cup Quarter Finals. I know who I was rooting for, so this makes me sad. Now on to Brazil vs. France tomorrow. (World Cup Blog — a really good site!)

NA23FO01.JPGAcclaimed Argentine director Fabian Bielinsky, 47, died in his sleep on Wednesday in Sao Paulo of what appears to have been a heart attack.

Bielinsky was, after directing only two feature length films, one of Argentina’s most acclaimed directors, most notable for his film Nueve Reinas:

…winner of 21 international awards, and later for the police story El Aura (2005), for which he had just won six awards at the Cóndor de Plata awards ceremony.

Why Yo Amo NYC en el Verano

summerstage_2.jpgWe may not have the greatest (read cleanest)beaches pero the big mango has plenty to get excited about during the summer especially when it comes to FREE musical offerings. One of my personal favorites is Central Park’s SummerStage that always offers up some hot Latino acts for all musical tastes. This year the lineup includes Ska Cubano, Seu Jorge, Jose Gonzalez, Alex Cuba Band, a noche flamenca, From Mambo to Hip Hop, and the 4th Brazilian Film Festival of New York: This Is Bossa Nova, Lenine. I will personally be hitting most of these shows (with my camera) but I think I’m most excited about the hip-hop rock en espanish mash up offered on August 5 with Puerto Rico’s Calle 13 and Argentino Gustavo Cerati (just writing about it is getting me all hyped).

Check out the complete SummerStage lineup at the official website

boothsmall.jpg Who would have thunk it? According to an article posted on the Washington Post’s web site, the harsh positions taken on the immigration issue by conservatives in the the House of Representatives may be hurting President Bush’s Latino cred. According to the article:

The latest blow to Bush’s efforts to woo Hispanics came last week, when a band of House Republicans unexpectedly balked at renewing the 1965 Voting Rights Act, partly because of a 30-year-old requirement that many local governments provide bilingual ballots.

Ay who needs voting rights anyway right? Forget the fact that the Voting Rights Act is more than just about Latinos. According to Iowa Republican Rep. Steve King:

Multilingual ballots divide our country, increase the risk of voter error and fraud, and burden local taxpayers.

Except that many of those requiring multilingual ballots are taxpayers.

English: Official language of Pennsylvania

905f.gifRemember the Geno’s Cheesesteak debaucle in Philly? Well, I’m sure Mr. Geno is smiling today as a new bill to make English the official language of Pennsylvania was passed yesterday in the state’s House.

The measure would make English Pennsylvania’s “official language” and require state and local governments to print official documents in English only. It passed 159-34.

Supporters say the bill would save taxpayers money and, in the long run, help all nonEnglish-speaking residents by essentially forcing them to learn the language.

“It will help non English-speaking people become more assimilated into society and help them become more prosperous,” said Rep. Scott Boyd, a West Lampeter Township Republican.

Dubya’s hija is going south

jenna_bush.jpgJust where Jenna Bush is headed is anyone’s guess (I mean isn’t Latin America just one big homogenous country to these people anyway?) but according to People Magazine, Dubya’s hija is going to continue her career as a teacher “south of the border”:

First daughter Jenna Bush, who for the past year and a half taught third grade at Washington’s Mount Pleasant charter school, is going to leave the nation’s capital and continue her teaching career in Latin America, reports The Washington Post.

Bush, 24, should be in place South of the Border by the end of summer, says the paper. The White House had no comment when asked of the plans and of the cost to taxpayers for the first daughter’s security in the faraway post.

Get ready Mexico, Colombia, Peru or wherever…hide the tequila/pisco/rum…there’s a new güera in town!

09.hayek.jpgMexican actriz Salma Hayek has teamed up with Human Rights Watch (HRW) and 65 other organizations in Mexico and the U.S, to make a call via an open letter to the presidential candidates in Mexico to make the commitment to “prevent and punish” crimes against women. Mexico is the home of Ciudad Juarez where over the last 13 years, more than 400 women have been murdered or have “disappeared”. Salma said:

It’s outrageous that Mexican women must live afraid of the killers harassing them on the streets.

Tomorrow, June 30, the names of the candidates who made the commitment to fight violence against women will be released so that those going to the polls on Sunday know where the candidates stand. Props to Salma for using her star power to bring attention to the issue of violence against mujeres and for making this an important issue in the upcoming presidential election in Mexico.

Why We Should Care About the Mexican Election

8:54 am By Maegan La Mala · mexico · Comments Off

29 Jun 2006

mex_0622.jpgThe answer has nothing to do with immigration (well maybe it does – just a little). According to an article posted at AlterNet, we in the United States could learn a few things from the upcoming Mexican presidential election scheduled to take place this coming Sunday. The three candidates to watch are Andres Manuel López Obrador aka AMLO of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD), Felipe Calderón Hinosa, of outgoing Presidente Fox’s National Action Party (PAN), and Robert Madrazo of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

Spain celebrates Pride

23233220_4311f6e80c.jpgSpain, the third country in Europe to allow for gay marriage is celebrating Pride 2006 today with something to be proud of: equality. Has much changed with the new law? Well, it seems at least some things are different on the one year anniversary of Spain’s marriage law: rainbow flags are flying alongside Spanish flags at government buildings.

…in Barcelona, the various local government offices (Generalitat de Cataluña) hoisted today the rainbow flag, a symbol of diversity in sexual orientation.

Specifically, the gay flag flies over the office of the Secretary General of Youth, the Catalan Institute for Women and the offices of the Program for the Gay, Lesbian and Transexual community.

Who is Not Watching the Copa Mundial

12:50 pm By Maegan La Mala · Sports| TV · 1 Comment

28 Jun 2006

goolicon.jpgAccording to a Rasmussen Reports survey (who?), only 6% of Americans are following the World Cup. Now let’s look a little more closely at this report. The term “Americans” is not not defined. Only 1,000 people were polled and it does not indicate the race of nationality of the people polled. Cuz you know that if these pollsters came into any barrio or hood and asked Latinos if we were watching, listening, reading about the Mundial the numbers would be way different. According to this poll what sport do “Americans” like to follow? Football of course or futbol americano as I was taught to say it in Spanish class.
