piropo.jpegOye mami. Yeah you. I wanna hit that. Psst. Why don’t you look back? Ay you ain’t that pretty anyway. As soon as the temperatures begin to rise into skirt and sandalia season, the brain cells and self-control of some men seem to disappear. Yes, it’s piropo season. While I am not against being given a well placed compliment, there is a fine line between a passing “You look nice today” and “I wanna lick you up and down” that men here on the streets of NYC cross. Well some mujeres aren’t taking it anymore and are fighting back, with their cameras.

$34 dollars an hour, anyone game?

11:58 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Labor|society · 1 Comment

18 May 2006

immigration.jpgThe Chicago Tribune reports on the shortage of “American” labor to do jobs that pay quite well, due to the physical nature of the jobs. I guess Bush’s “jobs Americans won’t do” quote rings true?

Cyndi Smallwood is looking for a few strong men for her landscaping company. Guys with no fear of a hot sun, who can shovel dirt all day long. She’ll pay as much as $34 an hour.

She can’t find them.

Maybe potential employees don’t know about her tiny Riverside firm. Maybe the problem is Southern California’s solid economy and low unemployment rate. Or maybe manual labor is something that many Americans couldn’t dream of doing.

“I’m baffled why more people do not apply,” Smallwood says.

President Bush is not. In his speech to the nation Monday night, he referred to “jobs Americans are not doing,” echoing a point he has been making for years. To fill these spurned jobs and keep the economy humming, Bush says, the U.S. needs a guest worker program.

We all know that manual labor ain’t fun. Read the whole article and you be the judge. Is it true that there are jobs that no one will take except immigrants?

Just last week we reported on how Mr. livin la vida loca was helping to fight internet predators. This week his foundation signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration to combat sexual exploitation and the trafficking of children. At the agreement signing in Madrid, Spain, Ricky said:

We are committed to ending child exploitation.Unfortunately, more than half of trafficking victims worldwide are children, forced into pornography, prostitution and labor servitude, among other forms of exploitation.

Building Fences and Now Quite Amnesty

8:35 am By Maegan La Mala · Controversia|Immigration · Comments Off

border_fence.jpgThe U.S. Senate is just fine with amnesty thank you very much, just don’t call it that. Yesterday the Senate give its nod to an immigration reform plan that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and hundreds of miles of new fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border. The House of Representatives is making it very clear however that anything resembling amnesty will be rejected. The Senate plan also calls for 500 miles of vehicle barriers.

hate.gifHate crimes against Latinos are on the rise according to two new studies by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center; it seems that aggressors are using the immigration debate as an excuse to incite violence:

Hate crimes against Latinos are on the rise, according to a two recent reports. The Southern Poverty Law Center reports that the number of hate groups has risen 30 percent since 2000.

Mark Potok, editor of the SPLC’s quarterly report on extremist organizations, told USA Today that immigration “has been critical to the growth of the hate movement.”

ADL’s report, released on April 24, states that white supremacists, skinheads, and other extremist groups are using the immigration debate to incite violence against Latinos, regardless of status, around the country.

The most recent and most publicized hate crime incident against a Latino is the case of David Ritcheson, a Houston teenager who was brutally beaten in Houston after some other teens suspected he had attempted to kiss a white girl.

Spring Democrats, a liberal Houston-area blog (yay!), points the figure at the local press, which seems to be shining the light away from the incident. Indeed, the case is getting less attention than one would expect. The Houston Chronicle has no coverage of the incident on its website, even though it happened fairly recently.

Other media seem to have forgotten about it as well; just do a Google News search on “David Ritcheson” and you’ll get basically nothing. Not so the case with Natalee Holloway. That wasn’t a hate crime, but it is a story that still has major legs a whole year later.

Almodovar gets high honors in Spain

5:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Arts|Celebrities|Events|Movies|Spain · Comments Off

17 May 2006

almodovar-sm.jpgFamed Spanish cineasta Pedro Almodóvar, one of Spain’s most recognizable personalities, has been awarded the prestigious “Premio Principe de Asturias” prize for excellence in the arts.

Almodovar was chosen “both for his expertise and the honesty of his work, and for the joy and vitality of his scripts, and above all for implanting his roots, which are ours, too, into the society of a planet on the verge of a nervous breakdown and which straddles two centuries,” said the jury that awards the arts prize.

“His work, rooted in a Spanish society which was opening up to deep changes, has gained a universal dimension through original language which is richly expressive and capable of synthesizing human complexity,” the jury added.

Almodovar described himself as “overwhelmed” and “undeserving” of the prize when he received the news at the Cannes Film Festival in France, where his latest film, “Volver” is competing for the festival’s top prize, the Palm D’or.

Previous Principe de Asturias prize winners include Woody Allen, JK Rowling, Nelson Mandela, and Arthur Miller. Almodóvar’s co-winners this year include Bill and Melinda Gates and the National Geographic Society.

Latinas Are Hot

12:23 pm By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Magazines · 1 Comment

17 May 2006

longoria.eva.jpgNo entiendo why everyone is so surprised when a Latina makes it on the Hot 100 list of the numerous men’s magazines out on the market. Doesn’t everyone realize we’re hot? Regardless, Maxim released it’s Seventh Annual “Hot 100″ list with Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria at #1 for a record breaking second year in a row. Other Latinas making the top 10 include Jessica Alba at #2 and Cameron Diaz at #7. Now if only the mass media would pay attention to Latinas on other Hot 100 lists.

Bush “border plan” media roundup

5:55 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Politics · 1 Comment

16 May 2006

060515bush.jpgThe media is abuzz today with varying opinions about Bush’s border plan, announced last night in his national address. Conservatives and liberals alike seem to agree on one thing: the plan sucks.

Here’s a brief roundup of what media and politicians are saying about last night’s announcement:

A certain Austrian named Arnie (our beloved governor) called the plan a “mixed bag” and added that federal response up to this point has been “embarrassing and disastrous”.

The BBC reports on the mixed reaction on the part of both Republican and Democrats to what many are calling “word games”. The BBC has also compiled the reactions in a list of quotes for easy reading.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has published a similar list of “reactions in quotes” attributed to Texas politicians. Surprisingly, conservative Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison suggests that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and that the Northern border should be sealed in the exact same way (!)

Not everyone crossing the border is Mexican

5:39 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration · Comments Off

16 May 2006

vert.bordersign.gi.jpgThink everyone crossing the border from Mexico into the U.S. is a Mexican immigrant? Think again. The Washington Post reports on the phenomena of non-Mexican immigrants from as far away as Brazil making their way in through Texas, and the crackdown that Border Patrol has started to stop them.

The Weslaco station, 50 miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico, is ground zero in the effort to stem the flow of non-Mexican immigrants. More than half of “other than Mexican” immigrants apprehended this year by the Border Patrol were caught in the Rio Grande Valley sector, which spans 19 Texas counties and the river’s last 320 miles.

Last year, the largest group caught in the sector was Brazilian. But in August, the United States expanded the deportation of non-Mexican border crossers without court hearings, and in October, the Mexican government stopped letting Brazilians enter without a visa. The number of Brazilians caught here is just 500 this fiscal year, down from 22,124 in fiscal 2005.

This fiscal year 52 percent of non-Mexicans caught here said they were from El Salvador.

From over 22,000 to just 500 in only one year? Only because Mexico requires visas for Brazilians now? Pretty dramatic drop based on one piece of policy change from the other side of the border.
