The media is abuzz today with varying opinions about Bush’s border plan, announced last night in his national address. Conservatives and liberals alike seem to agree on one thing: the plan sucks.
Here’s a brief roundup of what media and politicians are saying about last night’s announcement:
A certain Austrian named Arnie (our beloved governor) called the plan a “mixed bag” and added that federal response up to this point has been “embarrassing and disastrous”.
The BBC reports on the mixed reaction on the part of both Republican and Democrats to what many are calling “word games”. The BBC has also compiled the reactions in a list of quotes for easy reading.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram has published a similar list of “reactions in quotes” attributed to Texas politicians. Surprisingly, conservative Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison suggests that what’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and that the Northern border should be sealed in the exact same way (!)

Think everyone crossing the border from Mexico into the U.S. is a Mexican immigrant? Think again. The Washington Post reports on the phenomena of non-Mexican immigrants from as far away as Brazil making their way in through Texas, and the crackdown that Border Patrol has started to stop them.
The Weslaco station, 50 miles upriver from the Gulf of Mexico, is ground zero in the effort to stem the flow of non-Mexican immigrants. More than half of “other than Mexican” immigrants apprehended this year by the Border Patrol were caught in the Rio Grande Valley sector, which spans 19 Texas counties and the river’s last 320 miles.Last year, the largest group caught in the sector was Brazilian. But in August, the United States expanded the deportation of non-Mexican border crossers without court hearings, and in October, the Mexican government stopped letting Brazilians enter without a visa. The number of Brazilians caught here is just 500 this fiscal year, down from 22,124 in fiscal 2005.
This fiscal year 52 percent of non-Mexicans caught here said they were from El Salvador.
From over 22,000 to just 500 in only one year? Only because Mexico requires visas for Brazilians now? Pretty dramatic drop based on one piece of policy change from the other side of the border.

Latinos like a good cup of coffee and generally we don’t want to spend Starbuck’s prices to get one, pero is McDonald’s coffee something the Latino population really wants? The fast-food chain is banking on it, using Pan-Latin star chef Douglas RodrÃguez as its messenger. According to HispanicAd RodrÃguez:…
…was tapped by McDonald’s Restaurants of the New York/ New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area to appear on various Spanish radio programs in the New York vicinity and brought along McDonald’s Premium Roast Coffee for his hosts.
While President Bush practiced how to say border security for his speech last night, the U.S. State Department imposed military sanctions against Venezuela citing concerns over Caracas’ ties with Iran and Cuba, considered state sponsors of terrorism. The sanctions include a ban in arm sales and technology transfers to Venezuela. Eric Watnik, a spokesman for the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs said:
We are certifying to Congress that Venezuela is not fully cooperating with US anti-terrorism efforts.
