Racist teacher canned in Chicago

kids-painting.jpgAn art teacher who allegedly erupted in racial slurs towards her students — among them “all Mexicans are criminals” — has been fired by the Chicago charter school where she works. U.S. press has been reporting on this in bits and pieces, but Spanish daily 20 Minutos sums it up quite well:

According to witnesses, the teacher became angry last Friday during an art class when someone stained her jacket with paint.

It was then that she said, according to the same sources, “all Mexicans are criminals” and “you were born to scrub floors”.

The article points out the school was advised by its attorneys that the best thing to do was to fire the teacher. When this was announced last night at a PTA meeting the attendees burst into applause.

According to CBS2 Chicago, all teachers at the school will now have to undergo “sensitivity training”.

Latino population booms, more born in U.S.

The census bureau has just released some data that shows a rise in the U.S. Latino population and points to the fact that this surge is more due to the number of children — American-born U.S. citizens of Latino descent — than to the influx of immigrant workers. From CNN.com:

Bureau figures released Wednesday show the U.S. population grew by 2.8 million between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005. Hispanics accounted for 1.3 million of that increase, with 800,000 attributable to natural causes — births minus deaths — rather than immigration.

ricky.gifRicky Martin, always the humanitarian (has he said anything about the Rican $$ crisis by the way?):

…taped three educational multimedia videos (each one in English, Spanish and Portuguese). The videos aim to provide minors, parents and teachers useful tools to protect themselves against sexual predators, identity theft, child pornography and violent content, among other risks in the Internet.

This is part of the Boricua entertainer’s role as Goodwill Ambassador to UNICEF. The project is being funded by Ricky’s own foundation and Microsoft Latin America.

prprotest.jpgI think everyone is hoping that there may be a light at the end of the dark Puerto Rican financial tunnel. It’s being reported that a deal has finally been reached on how to solve the Puerto Rican fiscal crisis that has left nearly 100,000 island workers without work or a paycheck for the last 11 days. The deal, which was brokered through special committee comprising two economists, a professor and a former judge includes a combination of tax reforms, a $741 million bank loan and possible downsizing of the commonwealth’s government. However, the plan which was announced by Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila last night, still needs to be approved by the legislature. Pro-statehood Sen. Pedro Rossello stated:

Those who have the power to legislate are the legislators. The Legislature can’t transfer this power to a committee — particularly to a committee that hasn’t been elected by the people.

More likely than not there will still be politicos arguing while the workers in Puerto Rico continue to suffer.
