proudamerican.jpgAP is reporting on a new internet-based campaign which states as its mission “combat stereotypes” of Latinos in the U.S.:

The site for the new “I am a Proud American” campaign, http://www.iamaproudamerican.com, was designed to cross ethnic and social lines and hook people, young and old, creators Bettina Nava and Max Fose said.

“Were hoping it’s edgy, it’s controversial,” said Nava, a Republican political consultant who has worked with Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz. “I don’t know what the impact this endeavor is going to have in the end, but we couldn’t sit back and hear this rhetoric.

The campaign is also producing a series of videos depicting cultural stereotypes to illustrate the point.

Alma awards winners (kind of)

alma_longoria170x225.jpgThe NCLR Alma Awards, yet another Latino awards event that deemed VL not worthing of inviting, took place last night in Los Angeles. Hosted by Eva Longoria, the awards were attended by a whos-who list of Latino celebs. Check out some great photos at Spain’s El Mundo.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a press release announcing the winners, and the website has not been updated to reflect the results of the awards. I guess they are wanting to keep results under wraps until the show airs on June 5th, but a bit chafa, if you ask me.

The L.A. Times’ Tom O’Neil apparently had the same problem, but he’s done some of the dirty work to put together a list of some of the people who received an Alma award last night. Here’s a taste, then visit Tom’s blog for more:

capt.xbl10705020034.puerto_rico_government_shutdown_xbl107.jpgAs the financial crisis in Puerto Rico enters into its 8th day, leaving nearly 100,000 government employees without work and the Commonwealth losing its current credit ranking, there is growing talk that the fiscal crisis will cause a growth in movement from Puerto Rico into the United States. Carlos Irizarry, a Kissimmee City, Florida Commission candidate was quoted as saying:

Ready or not, we have to take it and work with it. As Americans, [everyone has] the right to go from state to state to look for a place that will benefit their family.

microchip.jpgNo, this is not science fiction. Colombian President Álvaro Uribe may have offered up his people as human guinea pigs to the U.S. government as a way to deal with the immigration “problem”. Telemundo is reporting that the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo claims that in a meeting earlier this year with Republican senators Arlen Specter and Jeff Sessions, Uribe suggested that Colombian migrant workers be implanted with a microchip in order to track them and insure their timely return to their country. The Colombian government is denying that this ever happened, of course, saying that Uribe responded to the Senators’ concerns regarding the timely return of temporary workers by saying:

Well that should be easy for you because thee should be technology to control those things.
