minuteman.jpg The minutemen are coming! The minutemen are coming! Yesterday the Minuteman Project border patrol group began a 10-day cross-country caravan to Washington DC demanding tighter immigration contrl including a fence. Jim Gilchrist, who founded the volunteer border control group in Southern California a year ago said:

When you have 1 million illegal aliens marching on the streets, that is a declaration of domination over the United States. And that is not acceptable.

The caravan consisted of four camper vans and a handful of cars leaving Los Angeles and is set to arrive in DC on May 12.

Newsflash: Anthem translation is nothing new

inter.jpgRecent controversy around the translation of the National Anthem into Spanish has spurred some experts in Texas to look to history to tell us about the Anthem’s past. Turns out it had already been translated into Spanish (and other languages) nearly 100 years ago, and that version caused no public outcry. Indeed, it was actually commissioned by the U.S. government:

President Bush has spoken out against the translated version of the national anthem, saying it should be sung in English only. If so, that’s actually a break with American tradition, says Walter Kamphoefner, a history professor at Texas A&M University.

The Library of Congress archives dozens of versions of the anthem, including a couple in German and a Spanish translation commissioned by the U.S. Department of Education in 1912.

Perhaps naysayers should have protested the fact that it was recorded by Reggaeton performers instead. Actually, that argument wouldn’t hold water since the anthem is regularly performed at public events in variety of genres.

Salma-Hayek.jpgColombian rocker Juanes and Mexican actress Salma Hayek joined forces with actress Ashley Judd this week to raise awareness about AIDS in Guatemala:

“I know that there is misinformation, that there is a stigma and superstitions that only contribute to the spread of AIDS,” Judd, world ambassador for the Washington-based YouthAIDS group, said while visiting an AIDS clinic run by Maryknoll nuns in the town of Coatepeque, 165 kilometers (100 miles) west of Guatemala City.

Fellow actress Salma Hayek and Colombian singer Juanes, who also represent the group, were expected to join Judd later Tuesday. The three planned to stay in Guatemala for several days, during which time they will meet with President Oscar Berger to discuss the AIDS situation in the country. Judd and Hayek will then continue the tour in Honduras and Nicaragua.

Salma had been scheduled to fly out to Guatemala earlier, but postponed her trip in observance of the May 1 boycott on Monday.
