Puerto Rico : Isla de Desencanto

08:00 H | Topics: Puerto Rico

capt.xbl10705020034.puerto_rico_government_shutdown_xbl107.jpgYesterday marked day 2 of the Puerto Rican partial shutdown. Schools and non-essential government services were closed because of the commonwealth's fiscal crisis caused by a budget dispute between the island's governor, Anibal Acevedo Vila, and the opposition party in the legislature. The shutdown as left about 100,000 people on the island unemployed and seeking benefits or other jobs. The governor's office and legislators have been unable to agree on a fiscal plan since 2004. As a result, the island has racked up a $740 million budget gap.

500,000 students began an early summer vacation while the governor and the two-body legislature disagree about implementing a sales tax to back a loan. Currently Puerto Rico has no sales tax. Acevedo wanted a 7 percent sales tax, but now has backed somewhat from his positions, saying he was willing to accept a 5.9 percent sales tax proposed by the island's Senate. The island's House of representatives wants a 4 percent sales tax.

As a Puerto Rican, this is disgrace and I'm waiting for the U.S. government to use this as an opportunity to step in and say "See, we told you that you couldn't rule yourselves."

I saw this on TV last night and was like "what country is this?" as I was taking in the info. I was floored when I realized it was P.R.

I am not surprise about this outcome. I am ashame that with such progress we have in PR, we still have a government that can't run our island.

The problem is not that we can not rule ourselves the problem is USA and pedro rossello USA dont give a fuck about Puerto Rico and i hope they never do.

I agree that the problem is not that we can't rule ourselves...I'm saying that's the excuse the U.S. will use. I disagree that the U.S. doesn't give a fuck about Puerto Rico either because if it really didn't give a fuck, the us gov. would stop holding it as a colony.

Listen to you people... If the US were to pull out of PR, and take all of our money with us, that island would be a total diasaster in less than one week. You can't even manage a discussion between the Governer and the Senate President in a time of crisis. What a joke. What do you really think the US gets out of this "colony" relationship, except that we have to pay your bills and clean up your mess. I would LOVE to see self-rule in PR - I can't wait!!!

us statehood is 1,000 light-years from PR.the collapse of the system is evident, bankruptcy is knocking the door mixed with political uncertainty. PR is closer than ever to full independence.

What really happens is that the Legislature is looking for anything to make the governor look bad. But it's too late, people are not ignorant anymore. Both the public and the private sector continue to suffer while a bunch of idiots sits in "El Capitolio", some playing on-line games as evidenced by some news channels, waiting for who know what else to happen. They are blind folded by political fanatism. El pueblo needs action NOW!!!

As someone actually living in San Juan (some of you probably are) I can pretty much tell you that this is about 70% theatrics. Both the "governor" and the "legistature" are lying sons of bitches, I'm pretty sure that first of all, money is scarce within our government or else, the statehooders wouldn't even be considering a sales tax. But I don't believe things are so bad as to warrant a 7% sales tax. Lower our state taxes and then put that tax on. Or better yet, severely lower our taxes (something negible) and spike the sales tax to 9% or 11%. Many states have no state taxes but they do have a sale tax. This way those poor mofos that do nothing all day and live on welfare can pay taxes too and that nice Lexus that rich guy bought for their 16 year old daughter can put a whole lot more to our streets than a brat with an expensive car.

Im all for that idea of spiking the sales tax... u won't believe how many people dont even pay state taxes in the island, with a sales tax then fuck it, everyone has to pay. As for the politicians, don't kid yourselves people, this is the fault of everyone involved. There is a moment that party politics should cease and agreements have to be made for the good of the people. Apparently all the idiots running the island cant seem to understand that. We haven't agreed for something as basic as the budget for the last 3 fiscal years.

People need to stop worrying about what the US will think. It's funny cause I've talked to some of my friends that are more worried about the way it looks to the United States than worrying about the students and workers without jobs. The US will not give us independence as easily as everyone would like to think, that would be disastrous for many American companies and more importantly farmaceuticals already on the island. It's not like the US doesn't have anything invested in Puerto Rico, last time I checked the United States doesn't usually take in charity causes.

Think about it, Puerto Ricans are so consumerist that everywhere in the US Kmart went bankrupt, except in Puerto Rico where it actually made money. No matter how bad the economy is, Plaza Las Americas is always full. Don't get me wrong, Im all for independence, but people need to realize that status, and the United States' perception of us is not the issue here.

taxing the poor/middle class is not the answer, taxing those who take out billions out of pr like walmart and kmart is the answer.

Wats up with the damn world today first is about immirgration now about Puerto Rico. Im not puerto Rican but I love the country i hope all of this is over

12. RazaTaina ~ Thursday, May 04 2006 | 12:10H:

By instituting a sales tax u don't tax the poor/middle class... u tax everyone, even more wealthy people because they will consume more.

I truly beleive that Puerto Rico can't fend for themselves. I'm living in Puerto Rico now and I will tell this place is fucked up. Not only is the Puerto Ricans stuck up and rude, but they all think that they are better than everyone in the world. However if you come here it seems like you stepped backed at least 20 years as far as the technology standpoint is concerned. I beleive that the Puerto Rican slogan should be simply " We want some thing for nothing". I just want to know two things, if this place is sooooooo great why are there more Puerto Ricans in the United States than on the island, and why does every other spanish cultures not like them. Please respond.

14. Maegan la Mala ~ Wednesday, Sep 13 2006 | 20:40H:

Part of the idea behind colonialism is to create and maintain a state that cannot fend for itself economically and otherwise.

One of the reasons there are so many Puerto Ricans in the U.S. can be traced back to "economic" programs like Operation Bootstrap which actually decreased the number of work on the island for many Ricans forcing many to migrate to the "mainland" where women like my grandmother and her sisters worked in sweatshops .

I don't know what you mean by Spanish culture? Do you mean Spanish as in from Spain or do you mean Latin American? As a Puerto Rican I have many friends from all over Latin America and Spain and they like me pretty damn well enough, as do many people I have met in my travels in Latin America and Spain.
