Boycott: Good or bad? Tell us

Ourladyoftheangelsdedication.jpgThere’s debate swirling around whether or not the May 1st boycott will be beneficial to the emerging immigrant rights movement or if it will be damaging, further inciting scorn from the mainstream its meant to convince. The most outspoken voice of opposition to the boycott is a guy who’s got a lot of pull among Latinos in L.A. (Catholic and not, given his support of more open immigration laws and the recent demonstrations)– Cardinal Mahony:

Cardinal Roger Mahony, a vocal leader of the marches against congressional attempts to crackdown on illegal immigration, does not support a planned student and worker boycott on May 1.

“Go to work. Go to school. And then join thousands of us at a major rally afterwards,” Mahony said in a prepared statement.

Mahony also said “that he will instruct his priests in all 288 parishes in the Los Angeles Archdiocese to defy the relevant provisions of the Sensenbrenner-King Bill in protest, if they becomes law.” Should and will Latinos listen to him?

What do you think? Will a boycott help significantly further the cause or set it back? Counter-productive or necessary?

So much for “community citizenship”

01.gifSome boy scouts in Utah are being accused of violating policy by participating in a political event. The kids were out to earn their “Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge” but their leader got a slap on the hand instead.

A Boy Scout official here has warned a Latino troop earning merit badges for “Citizenship in the Community” that it violated policy against involvement in political events with its participation in immigration demonstrations last week in Salt Lake City.

Michael Clara, Scout master of Boy Scout Troop 987, said he received a phone call Wednesday from Vic Rowberry, a field director for the Great Salt Lake Council of Boy Scouts of America, who said the troop shouldn’t have participated in the events.

Clara disagreed, saying the troop had provided the flag ceremony and observed the Republican State Convention in August 2005. What’s the difference between that and carrying and passing out flags at the nonpartisan immigration demonstrations last week, he said.

Oh, right, okay. So you can participate in an event for the Republican State Convention and NOT in an event in which no political party endorsements exist?

This reaks of, well, partisanship. Looks like we can guess the politics of boy scout leaders in Utah. Oh, and the scout leader who took the boys to the protest? He’s a Republican, too — a Utah Republican assembly member as it were — but apparently a more open-minded one.

myrna.jpg In 2004 Myna Dick’s pregnancy saved her from being deported to Mexico when a federal judge in Missouri declared her fetus a U.S. citizen. Now, 17 month old Zachary may lose his mother and his father may lose his wife now that the 31 year old could be barred from the U.S. for life.

“Illegal immigration is deeply intertwined within our households and communities,” said Doris Meissner, former commissioner for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. “A family like this is an illustration of literally millions of people in the country today”.

“Catch an Immigrant” nixed on Penn campus

2:17 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration · 1 Comment

0305_immigrant_300x401.jpgWhat do young Republicans at Penn State do for fun? They play a friendly game of “Catch an Illegal Immigrant”. Nice.

The College Republicans at Penn State University wanted to enter the debate about the nation’s borders by playing a “Catch an Illegal Immigrant Game.”

People would be invited to “catch” group members wearing orange shirts symbolizing illegal aliens.

Amid the student outcry that ensued, they softened their plan to an illegal immigration awareness day in which leafleting and speech-making would let both sides air their views on immigration policies.

School officials supposedly nipped that in the bud, though the undertones remain:

Some who registered complaints with the administration said they saw uncomfortable likenesses to the original game, down to participants designated to discuss illegal immigration wearing orange shirts.

This “game” is apparently not new. Similar acts were staged last year in North Texas while students at UT Austin held a counter event against it.

Read the opinions from Penn State’s newspaper.

Luis, I am Your Father

l-miguel.jpg That’s what a primo of the late Princesa Diana is saying to Mexican singer Luis Miguel. According to TV y Novelas magazine (so consider the source)Gerald Spencer, a sixth cousin of Princess Diana said he met LuisMi’s mami, Marcela Bastieri , and her husband Luis Gallego (a.k.a. Luisito Rey) in Italy and had an ahem, relationship with the couple and without a biology lesson, got Luis’s mami pregnant. Gerald Spencer revealed his paternity in his 2001 English language book Romeo and Juliette Have a Son. According to the revista, Spencer last saw LuisMi in 1996 when the tanned crooner was granted a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Gerald Spencer isn’t the first to claim to be Luis Miguel’s papi, a few years ago a Puerto Rican, where Luis Miguel was actually born, claimed paternity. True to character, Luis Miguel hasn’t commented.

Where are the Hollywood stars when you need them?

kanye.jpgActors and other performers — Latino or not — are shutting up about the immigration issue. AP reports on how, with a few rare exceptions (George Lopez, EJ Olmos, and Eva Longoria), Hollywood is keeping its trap shut with regard to this hot button issue for fear of “career suicide”:

Fear of career damage, confusion over a complex issue abruptly supercharged by waves of nationwide protests, and historic detachment from Hispanic realities are among the explanations offered by industry insiders and observers.

Not that the movement has needed famous standard bearers – it has been notable for its bottom-up genesis that has left it without recognizable leaders.

Images speak louder

The rhetoric, punditry and backbiting stirred up in the media and swirling around the immigrant rights movement is getting to be a bit much. Sometimes images are more eloquent than words, so I’m posting this one.

My Flickr friend Franciscophile snapped this one at our local SF protest. It gave me a peaceful feeling in the midst of all of this hostility.

Got a picture of the protests that you consider different from what the media is showing us? Send it to us at press@vivirlatino.com

march.jpg Ok anti-immigrant activists, get your cheer on and start your engines cuz this bit of new should make you all a little happy. Telemundo is reporting that at least 21 Mexican women have been fired from their jobs at Wolvering Packing in Detriot for missing work and participating in a pro-immigration march on March 27. A rep for the company said that the women, some who are undocumented, were told that their pressence was needed at work that day and if they missed work they would be fired.
