I spent 70 minutes last night in el Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago de Chile sharing Salvador Allende‘s final moments on September 11, 1973. Colombian actor Ramiro Sandoval plays the first democratically elected Socialist president of the Americas in the stage production, Allende:The Death of a President now showing at the Theater for the New City in the Lower East Side of New York City. They say that before you die, your entire life flashes before your eyes. Argentino-Americano journalist and current editor of the New York Daily News Spanish language weekly, la Hora Hispana, has wriiten a monologue that imagines what Allende was thinking in the hours leading up to his death including reflections on his life as a political leader, husband, and father.

According to a study released yesterday by the Immigration Policy Center (IPC), it’s not U.S. workers who will benefit the most from tighter immigration controls as many talking heads would have you think, but rather those who engage in human trafficing have the most to gain. This because stricter laws only force the underground pipeline of cheap labor to become more sophisticated. The study also played down the claim that tightening the border gates will lessen the threat of terrorism since most of those coming into the U.S. via the Mexican border are from Central and/or South America, hardly nations which threaten U.S. national security.

In an effort to raise awareness of the problem of land mines, singer Juanes did a rare performance at the European parliament in Brussels:
Colombian singer Juanes, guitar in hand, made the “eurodiputados” stand up and dance. The reason was to call attention to the issue of landmines.
Yes, the parliamentarians really were up on their feet and dancing around. Don’t believe me? Watch this video (warning: not for the faint of heart or those violently opposed to acts of incredibly soul-less dancing).
At the end of the performance, Juanes was awarded a certificate for 2.5 million euros from the Parliament to aid in the elimination of land mines in his native Colombia.
Juanes is becoming Latin America’s Bono. For his program “Europe and Latin America: Mind your Step”, he spoke to the Parliament on behalf of Colombia like a statesman, before rocking their stuffed suited little butts out of the Eurocámara. Epa!
You can watch a longer video of the performance (more Juanes, less eurodancing) here. (Courtesy Europarl.es)

Catalina Sandino Moreno who graced the screen in her Oscar nominated role in the film Maria Full of Grace starred as a blushing bride last week in Cartegena, Colombia. The 25 year old actriz from Bogota married her longtime non-Latino boyfriend, David Michael Elwell in a simple ceremony in which, according to Latina magazine male guests wore white guayaberas and the women all had fresh flowers. Catalina will be on the big screen a few times in the not so distant future. She is appearing in a number of films to be released later this year including Paris, je t’aime, Fast Food Nation, and Journey to the End of the Night.

Ever wonder what the hell it is that JLo sees in her hubby Marc Anthony? JLo spilled one of his qualities to Harper’s Bazaar, according to People Magazine:
“He makes me slow down and eat lunch, which I used not to do,” she says. “We have different philosophies. I’ve been so disciplined. His process is ‘Chill, don’t kill yourself.’“Maybe,” she suggests, “I’ve got a martyr thing because I was raised Catholic. But with him I feel like I should relax and slow down. That’s a first for me.”
Seriously, JLo, slow down. You’re rich as hell, so you deserve a break today.
She doesn’t look like she’s getting one, though. Marc hauled JLo off to the D.R. and had her singing some duets with him at a concert there. I just hope that was nothing like their horrible “Escapemonos” fiasco at the 2005 Grammys.

19 Apr 2006At least not when it’s flat-out plagiarism.
plagiarism: the act of appropriating the literary composition of another author, or excerpts, ideas, or passages therefrom, and passing the material off as one’s own creation. (Via UCB Libraries web site).
It has recently come to our attention that a startling number of our posts are being repurposed in their entirety for use on a series of web sites, all of which seem to be controlled by the same person. The posts are often republished with a very discreet link to the original VL post, one that the typical reader would perhaps not notice.
We probably would have let that one slide — it would not have been the first time. But I also found that a post that I wrote for another blog I maintain was used in its entirety with no credit given at all. Straight-out plagiarism. This compelled me to look deeper into the site to find, to my surprise, that the site in question is not only plagiarizing content from that blog, but VL content (what a coincidence) and…our company information as well! Yes, they’ve even copied our “About” statement — I should know; I, along with Mala, wrote it:
Brown Pride is a daily publication developed by ublog, featuring all the latest in Latino style, products, entertainment, culture, and politics created for the diverse and influential Latino and Latina community in the U.S.
Look familiar? It should. It’s located to the right of this post. The only thing they changed was the company name.
Are we being uptight? No. Just because we operate under a Creative Commons license does not mean that anyone has the right to lift our content — much less corporate messaging — and use it on their site without citing us. First off, if you read the CC agreement, you’ll find that if one does not cite the source of the information and intends to use it for commercial purposes (AdSense!), they are in direct violation of said agreement.
What really gets us riled up here is that we are extremely tedious about citing our sources. You’ll note that when I quoted the definition for plagiarism, I linked to the place where I found the definition. Not to mention the work that Mala and I do on a daily basis to keep our readers informed. We care about what we write and give credit where credit is due, so yes, it pisses us off to see that others — particularly Latino blogs — are not doing the same. That doesn’t sound like “brown pride” at all to me.

To our copycat friends: we know that the Latino market is booming, more Latinos are on the web and that having Latino content on your site will make you some AdSense dollars. If that’s your motivation (it happens to not be ours), here’s a novel idea: create your own content. I know, I know, it’s time-consuming, but you know what? It’s totally gratifying as well.
In the end, this is no unsolved mystery. We know who’s behind this and we don’t plan to let up should this continue. Though hopefully by the time you read this the plagiarized content will be removed.
As for those who legitimately cite us, link to us, mention us and read us, we thank you for respecting our work and making VL a part of your day.

19 Apr 2006We don’t cite a web site called Pizza Marketing Quartely very often, but this little story has piqued our interest. Have you ever seen those acrobatic pizza dough competitions on the Food Network? As bizarre at it may seem to you, these contests have their stars and one of the biggest is a Mexican named Juan Hermosillo, a pizza tosser who had been living in the U.S. since he was 9 years old.
The fourth place title in the entire world goes to Juan Hermosillo for dough tossing at the 2006 World Pizza Championship in Salsomaggiore, Italy. However, Juan, who represented the United States as the U.S. Pizza Team’s acrobatic dough tosser, has been denied the right to re-enter into the United States, where he has lived for the past seventeen years of his life.

Hate has a variety of faces in today’s media; you’ve got your Lou Dobbs, your Michael Savage, and a personal fave, Bill O’Reilly. Bill’s not just about skewering liberals with his double speak and accusatory “interviews” — he also likes to stick his bigoted friends on the show as well. MediaMatters brings us a delightful little transcript of an exchange between O’Reilly and “conservative commentator” Ann Coulter:
O’REILLY: In the “Personal Story” segment tonight, conservative commentator and author Ann Coulter has some strong views on illegal immigration, and here she is. It’s a big mess, that’s for sure. Where do you stand on it as far as what would you like to see done?COULTER: I’d build a wall. In fact, I’d hire illegal immigrants to build the wall. And throw out the illegals who are here.
O’REILLY: You would throw them out.
COULTER: I can’t even –
O’REILLY: You would throw them out.
COULTER: Yeah.
O’REILLY: So –
COULTER: Yes.
O’REILLY: The wall, I got — I mean, you’re being sarcastic with the illegal aliens. But the wall is –
COULTER: No. It’s cheap labor.
Can anyone remember a time when there was so much hate in the media? Cable news has done nothing but help feed this sort of thing. It’s pretty sad that when you sit down to watch a “news” channel, all you can get these days is a bunch of lamebrain hate-filled rhetoric and no real dialogue. Disgusting.
Read the whole piece and watch the video on the MediaMatters site.

Why does it always seem that as soon as someone says “I’m in love! I’m going to be with this person forever!” that declaration marks the first moment of a downward spiral — the beginning of the end? Don’t tell that to Eva Longoria, who’s flaunting her amor para siempre plans in all of our faces:
Eva Longoria is a relationship kind of woman – and says she expects to stay with her beau, San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker “forever.”“I’d much rather be in a relationship,” the Desperate Housewives star tells PEOPLE. “There’s no way in the world I would rather be single. Tony is too. I’ve said the only reason Tony and I are going to stay together forever is because we’re too lazy to look for someone else.”
Let’s hope (23 year-old) Tony doesn’t get unlazy and pull a Kobe Bryant on her.

Maybe they saw that VL’s very own Jennifer was calling them out on their silence around the immigration issue. Whatever the reason, a bunch of Latino celebs are finally speaking out. Bobby Pulido, Paulina Rubio, Jose Manuel Figueroa, Maria Sorte, and Daddy Yankee in separate interviews on Univision’s chisme show El Gordo y la Flaca all said something in favor of immigrants (surprise surprise). La chica dorada aka Paulina Rubio gave props to
…the work force and labor the Latino community represents in the US.
and said that:
What we need is a balanced law in both countries.
