Latina blogger on mainstream media

12:36 H | Topics: Blogs - TV

Blog%2BImage_thumb_andersoncooper.gifI was lucky enough to catch blogger Alisa Valdes Rodriguez's appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 the other night. It's so great to see bloggers participating in the debate over immigration within the context of mainstream media, which seems to be doing more to divide than unite. Alisa told it like it is with regard to the media's portrayal of this issue:

...you've also got tens of thousands of undocumented Irish in Boston. You've got 100,000 Nigerians living in and around Houston. And my point is if this is truly an issue, if immigration is the issue -- illegal immigration, you should show a variety of faces. Because the way that the American media are covering the issue right now, it's becoming an anti-Latino story.

I cannot tell you how many times I've seen stories that equate Mexican, illegal, Latino, Hispanic, using those words interchangeably and also using them to mean Spanish speaking. Where in my state of New Mexico, which is a majority Hispanic state, only 14 percent of the people speak Spanish at all.

Alisa was invited back to the show the next day. Apparently all this notoriety is generating some interesting mail for her. From her blog:

I saw you tonight on CNN (Anderson Cooper's show). I am a Black woman and let me tell you, don't you dare compare these illegal alien protests to our Civil Rights movement in the 1960's. You understand me bitch???

You Mexicans are just users of the American system - just a bunch of lawbreakers. Go back to Mexico.

There is a lot to say about this ignorant statement, but Alisa already responded quite well. Read her response.

Yeah apparently whenever a Latina speaks about immigration we become Mexican.

See I'm not a huge fan of Alisa's books (maybe I'm just jealous) pero I appreciate that she responds from a historical context.

When will Anderson invite us on his show??? ja ja

OK, I know nothing about this women or her blog, but I just read her response and I think I love her. Her response is so good I got chills.

It saddens me when Black-Americans react this way. I've often had this discussion with my best friend, Angelica, whose boyfriend is black and from Georgia, which has had an influx of immigration from Mexico in the recent years. She's heard some interesting comments from people while visiting, including "You don't look/seem Mexican."

Our conclusion: The oppressed oppressing the only population they can, immigrants.

She's been doing great covererage recently on her blog on the way specifically the media is covering the immigration issue and how the media is portraying Latino stereotypes

I think it's a mistake for the TV new programs to bring bloggers on because it exposes the new reality: Bloggers tend to be substantive and informed, and the news anchors are empty-headed idiots with no real grasp of the issues (even though the mainstream media talks about bloggers as if they're a bunch of hacks).

Regarding this: *** if immigration is the issue -- illegal immigration, you should show a variety of faces. ***

In defense of the media they're covering events -- in this case the protests involving tens or hundreds of thousands of protesters, very few of which were waving Irish or Nigerian flags. Most of the protesters -- as are the vast majority of illegal aliens in the U.S. -- were Mexican or of Mexican descent.

Michael, I can't help but feel that the reason most of the protestors are Mexican/of Mexican descent is because they are the population who feels most attacked by the media and the hostility against immigrants. I agree with you in that numbers do have a lot to do with it.
