I’ll shut my lefty revolutionary mouth, as some would label it and blog about what’s really important, the Latin Grammys! For the first time in its history, the Latin Grammys will be in my current homebase, New York City. The event is scheduled for November 2nd at Madison Square Garden. With the move to such a large NYC venue, I just have one thing to say to the Grammy people, give VL press credentials!!!

Eva Longoria, everyone’s favorite ama de casa is getting political. She plans to broach the controversial topics of immigration and slavery in a new documentary to be produced by Eva herself:
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria is tackling America’s controversial immigration issues head on in a new film after learning that fellow Latinos are being roped into slavery. The actress accepts she has become a role model for the Latin community and she wants to affect change in the lives of immigrants living well below the poverty line in the US.
She says: “I work a lot with the National Council of La Raza, which is the largest Latino civil rights organisation in the country and I work a lot with the United Farm Workers.
“I’ve been in the fields with these people and I’ve tried to experience a day in the life of these people. I’m producing a documentary on the labour workers.”
Say what you will about a rich Hollywood star “spending the day” with laborers, the fact is Eva seems to be standing up (like other celebs) for the oppressed, voiceless immigrant population whose labor keeps this country’s economy chugging along. Bravo, Eva!

I was lucky enough to catch blogger Alisa Valdes Rodriguez’s appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 the other night. It’s so great to see bloggers participating in the debate over immigration within the context of mainstream media, which seems to be doing more to divide than unite. Alisa told it like it is with regard to the media’s portrayal of this issue:
…you’ve also got tens of thousands of undocumented Irish in Boston. You’ve got 100,000 Nigerians living in and around Houston. And my point is if this is truly an issue, if immigration is the issue — illegal immigration, you should show a variety of faces. Because the way that the American media are covering the issue right now, it’s becoming an anti-Latino story.I cannot tell you how many times I’ve seen stories that equate Mexican, illegal, Latino, Hispanic, using those words interchangeably and also using them to mean Spanish speaking. Where in my state of New Mexico, which is a majority Hispanic state, only 14 percent of the people speak Spanish at all.

Latino celebs are jumping on the bandwagon to support the rights of all people, including immigrants. The Dia sin Mexicanos boycott, that VL wrote about last week, is featured on Juan Gabriel’s website. The call to participate in the boycott goes so far as to name some big companies that Mexicanos should not buy from on May 1st including major fast food chains and big box retailers. I don’t think Juan Gabriel will be getting any endorsement offers anytime soon.

White Americans, and black Americans too, are going to have to get used to sharing this country — sharing it fully — with brown Americans. Things are going to be different. Deal with it.
At least Washington Post op-ed columnist Eugene Robinson wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is yesterday. Now while all Latinos/Hispanics (pick a box and move on) are not brown, we sure as hell ain’t white, at least not according to the United States race system which makes as much sense as the Homeland Security color coded warning system. The current immigration debate isn’t being so hotly debated because people are worried about those Canadians coming over the border. While people want to say its just about U.S. citizens losing jobs or wages being driven down, or safety, or U.S. services being overextended, its also about race. Why else the calls for protesters to carry U.S. flags and wear white? We, as Latinos, are expected to make ourselves more palatable to the mainstream, make ourselves less scary so we’ll be embraced.
