Documenting the undocumented

m10.jpgEver wonder what it’s really like to be an immigrant on the border? What about what it’s like to be a Minuteman? The creators of The Border Film Project, a photography project like none other I’ve seen, goes beyond the images we see in mainstream media to let the two groups tell their stories in photos. I wish I would have thought of this:

We are three friends – a Rhodes Scholar, filmmaker, and a Wall Street analyst – who spent three months on the U.S. Mexico border filming and distributing hundreds of disposable cameras to two groups on different sides of the line: undocumented migrants crossing the desert and Minutemen volunteers trying to stop them.

The project looks to portray the reality of the border and it does a great job at that. The immigrant photos are a mixed bag of strikingly “normal” everyday photos — some even showing happiness — to shocking and disturbing. They tend to photograph things around them; snakes, plants, their homes, while the Minutemen take more pictures of themselves and their activities, such as target practice and manning a radio.

Singer Marc Anthony and actor Andy Garcia will receive special recognition at the ALMA Awards, the National Council of La Raza announced Tuesday.

Let’s see if VivirLatino manages to get some press passes to cover this. I’m sure you loyal readers would be interested in reading about our antics at the awards, no?

usswashington.jpg Just when you thought it was safe to go back into Latin American waters, the U.S. Navy is once again conducting military maneuvers in the Caribbean and off the coast of South America. The two month long training exercise was announced last week and includes four ships, a 60-plane air wing and 6,500 sailors. The exercises, to resume sometime early this month, will mark the first time the Navy is in the region since ending exercises in Vieques, Puerto Rico, which were halted in January 2003 after years of struggle and protest both in Puerto Rico and in the United States. Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute, a pro-defense think tank in Washington said :

The presence of a U.S. carrier task force in the Caribbean will definitely be interpreted as some sort of signal by the governments of Cuba and Venezuela.

You think? Just one more reason why the U.S. is not going to let Puerto Rico out of its grip.

Forget it. I am not perfect. My fans will follow me as long as I keep writing good songs for them.
