Food TV Reality: Latina Eliminada

foodnetwork.jpgTo the horror of some of my friends, I am a Food Network addict. So, it comes as no surprise to them that I am also addicted to their Survivor-like reality show which pits would-be chefs against each other for a spot as the newest Rachael Ray protégé.

The show, as nail-bitingly entertaining as it is insufferable (like all reality TV) is comprised of a variopinto line-up of contestants. Okay, so maybe not so varied: you basically got one black guy and one Latina — a Puerto Rican named Evette — and bunch of white people. Oh, and an Asian girl, but they told her buh-bye in the very first round.

So once upon a time there was an aspiring TV chef named Evette, a Rican working mother from Florida, vying for a place for her traditional “Latino” cooking style among a more mainstream contestants.

6 out of 10 Californians say ‘yes’ to legalization

immigrant-in.jpgFrom the San Jose Mercury News, a new San Jose State University poll has found that 6 out of 10 California residents favor legalization for undocumented immigrants currently residing in the country:

Nearly six out of 10 Californians support allowing illegal immigrants to become legal residents and continue living and working in the state, according to a new poll released Sunday by a San Jose State University research center.

With the issue of illegal immigration roiling the nation and Congress, a broad spectrum of California residents backs legal status for undocumented workers — 59 percent of all adults polled support the controversial idea, the Survey and Policy Research Institute found. Registered voters also support allowing illegal immigrants to become legal, 54 percent to 36 percent.

According to the Mercury News, the strong opposition to legalization was found on the part of Republican voters, which is no surprise. Meanwhile, in the “real world” (as George Clooney puts it) or the rest of the country, nationwide polls showed:

…support across the country for the narrower — but equally explosive — proposal to give undocumented workers temporary legal status to remain in the United States. But that Associated Press poll also found Americans divided over whether illegal immigrants help or hurt the country.

Flora%20Mar.jpg Colombian actress Flora Martinez doesn’t understand why posters promoting the film she stars in, Rosario Tijeras, is being censored during its run in Mexico City. The posters for the film, which opened last Friday in 150 theaters in Mexico, have been censored over “indecent exposure” since both actor Manolo Cardona and her appear nude on a bed. Martinez asked :

How do they put up with politicians, unsolved deaths and so many things but they censor a naked body?, is this logical at all? what is it so annoying about a naked body, sex?

Rosario Tijeras, tells the violent story of a young mujer from Medellin in the 1980’s who struggles to survive and find love amid drug trafficking, prostitution, and murder.

Liberated Plena in NYC

PLENA_LIBRE_1%20%282%29.jpg Plena, a Puerto Rican musical genre rooted in Africa and agriculture, is making a comeback. While to many Ricans, like myself, the genre has always been alive, often played at house parties, the musical ensamble Plena Libre wants to liberate plena, as their name implies, and spread its good news.

San Juan , Puerto Rico based Plena Libre is touring the U.S. celebrating 11 years on the Latin music scene and their 11th CD titled Evolución, released in October of last year. This Friday, April 7th, Plena Libre will be playing two sets in New York City’s SOB’s. Muevete un poco at either the 8 pm or 10 pm set at 204 Varick Street. Tickets are $15, a bargain to pay pa’gozar!

Buy/Reserve Tickets at SOB’s

Story%2BImage_thumb_cu%2Bfair%2Blegalization%2Bbest.jpg The rallying call “Si Se Puede” is linked to Cesar Chavez and the West Coast farm worker movement, ut it was also the rallying cry of thousands of families, workers, immigrants, hermanos y hermanas on Saturday in New York City as they marched across the Brooklyn Bridge. Contrary to the image the mass media attempts to present, of Latinos and others taking it to the street to intimidate, the march on Saturday celebrated community struggle and love and an attempt to attach a human face to the current immigration debate. Rallies and marches are just some tools in the larger struggle for what boils down to basic human rights and are just one way the community can lend support and solidarity.
