A “sanctuary” in the city of angels

8:05 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Los Angeles · 1 Comment

24 Mar 2006

mexicobillboard.jpgIn response to recent proposed legislation which would require local law enforcement to act on illegal immigration, a 97% Latino suburb of L.A. has declared their town a “sanctuary” for immigrants:

…attracting fierce criticism from opponents who say it is encouraging lawlessness.

Maywood, a tiny urban pocket of Los Angeles county, has abolished its traffic police because of complaints that they were unfairly picking on Latino drivers.

Previously drivers without licences – almost all illegal immigrants – had their cars impounded. The city council has also passed a resolution opposing some of the toughest government measures against illegal immigration in recent times.

What would you do?

primetime.jpgI rarely watch network TV, but last night I was lucky enough to catch a fascinating episode of ABC’s Primetime entitled “What would you do?” ABC conducts experiments to see what people what people would do in certain situations: if they saw a child getting beaten up by other kids in a park, a couple fighting, etc. But I was particularly interested in the segment called “Taxi Cab Slurs”.

The premise is simple: put an actor in taxi cab as the driver and have him go off on a racist tirade to see how the passenger reacts, if at all. All of this is caught on hidden camera, of course.

They started out in New Jersey, where they picked up a business woman who is described as “Puerto Rican”. The driver starts going off on “Arabs” and the woman looks uncomfortable. Slowly she starts to counter his claims saying something like “I don’t agree because that would be prejudice and I am not anywhere close to being prejudiced.” Well, maybe not against middle eastern people, but what about Asians? When given the chance, this “woman of color” starts on Asians and can’t stop. Her prize-winning moment is when, in talking about the way Chinese people drive, she says “You know they can’t see right to left out of their eyes.” Classy.

Hunger Strike for Immigrant Rights

11:50 am By Maegan La Mala · Activism|Immigration|San Francisco · Comments Off

24 Mar 2006

bc_060322fastimmigfedbldg5571g_100.jpg On Tuesday over 50 hunger strikers and organizations began a 7 day protest in front of the San Francisco Federal Building. This action is being coordinated to protest Senator Arlen Specter’s bill that designates all undocumented immigrants as aggravated felons, allows for the indefinite detention of non-citizens, and criminalizes day-labor centers, churches, health clinics and all others who serve, help or work with undocumented immigrants. Monday, March 27th will be the final day of the hunger strike.

El Bronx Lives thanks to Fish.

herring-big.jpg When you think of wildlife and fish swimming in rivers, the South Bronx is probably the last place that comes to mind. Congressman José E. Serrano wants to change your mind. On Tuesday the Bronx Rican Congressman helped release 200 alewife herring into the Bronx River. This is the first time in recent memory that a native species of herring have been reintroduced to the river, a long time toxic dumping ground. The fish are expected to be the seed colony for a breeding population. In a statement released to the press Serrano said:

For many years, the Bronx River was a dumping ground, a virtual dead zone for wildlife. That picture today is totally changed. In many spots it has become an urban oasis, a refuge from the concrete and steel of the city. Adding wildlife back will only serve to continue that shift from a mistreated backwater to a treasured resource for generations to come.

Mobilizing for fair immigration

9:05 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Immigration · Comments Off

23 Mar 2006

06323203243_carnesstoppage323_230.jpgTens of thousands Latinos and supporters took to the streets today in Milwaukee to protest against harsher immigration legislation:

“We want to be treated with equality”, Hernández added. Some 90 businesses, run by Latin Americans in the southern sector of the city were closed during the day or for several hours in support of the protest.

The protestors are opposed to legislation, approved in December by the House of Representatives that would make being in the USA illegally a crime.

Accordingly, employers who take on illegal immigrants would be subject to new sanctions and the law would provide support for the construction of a wall along a third of the border with Mexico.

Meanwhile, Latino business owners in Atlanta are calling for a boycott which would shut the doors of their businesses tomorrow, to protest new immigration legislation in Georgia:

“They’ll see what type of effect it would have on the economy if they would take us all, like they say, ship us to Mexico or Guatemala or El Salvador,” Covarrubias said.

Community leaders say it’s a way to force Metro Atlanta to recognize the importance of Latin workers.

Business leaders have organized, and are encouraging Latin immigrants living in Metro Atlanta to spend their Friday without spending at all.

In understand the not spending, but shutting one’s own business seems a bit counter-productive to me.

Santana makes fans vibrate?

1-Santana.jpgProof that translation is thorny terrain. We reference a lot of stories from QuePasa.com here on VL but the headline of this one really stood out to me for obvious reasons:

Santana makes thousands of Peruvians vibrate in concert

Oh, goodness.

Lima, Peru, March 22, 2006 (Notimex).- Mexican guitarist Carlos Santana made thousands of Peruvians vibrate in a concert last Tuesday at the Monumental Stadium, east of Lima, the Peruvian media said today.

Is that a good or a bad thing? And is it legal to do that in public?

gael-garcia-bernal-another-man01.jpg If there is one thing Mala loves its a talented, smart, poltical Latino and Gael Garcia Bernal is on the top of my love/lust list. The 27 year old Mexican actor graces the cover of the Spring/Summer issue of Another Man magazine. Inside the magazine Gael talks about going against the grain of what many Latino actors are doing, purposely avoiding Hollywood. Taking that road less travelled hasn’t hurt him one bit. Gael says:

A film with no point of view is such a waste of money. So much money is spent on films. Oh man, spend that money somewhere else!

I will happily spend money to grab up this magazine and also cheerfully drop a ten dollar bill to see Gael on screen.

The little wine industry that could

7:19 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Argentina|Food|Marketing · Comments Off

22 Mar 2006

merlot.gifYou already vivir Latino, why not drink Latino?

Have you ever had Argentine wine? It’s consistently good and best of all, very affordable. I’m not ashamed to say that I had a $5 bottle of excellent vino argentino the other night.

Argentina wants more foreigners to come to know and love its wines, and is working on ways to make that happen. One way is to kick it up a notch, and make what will be considered world class wine:

”We’ve already shown the world that Argentina is capable of producing pleasing wines at a reasonable price,” said Bressia. “Now Argentina must consolidate its position as a maker of wines of great prestige . . . we can make the highest-quality wines.”

Increasing the presence of Latin American brands in the United States is something I get excited about. Small companies in countries like Argentina actually making an impact on a competitive American industry such as wine is great both for the consumer in that it opens him or her up to the diversity of another culture’s way of doing things, and great for the economy of the exporting country.

Here’s to Argentine wine busting down the doors in the U.S. Salud!
