Shakira : Covering Up and Thinking Fat is funny?

While we're on the topic on the cadera shimmying Colombiana Shakira, she's featured on the cover of the latest issue of Elle. In an extensive interview with the magazine Shaki insists:
"A lot of people think I like to expose my body, but I don't,” Shakira protests. “It's just because the dance moves require it."It must be someone else's half naked crystal adorned body in the video Hips Don't Lie.
I admit I have a love/hate relationship with the Barranquilla born artista. My daughter is a huge fan and I've been accused of being anti-feminist for letting my daughter dance around like Shakira. While I can't help but shake my own hips listening to her Spanish language songs (call me a hata but her English language songs kind of bug me) sometimes I have to step back and be all "Oh no you didn't!". From the same Elle magazine spread:
She has found a bit of catharsis in a parody of the “La Tortura” video that's been burning up the Web. It's called “La Gordura,” or “The Fatness,” and features an obese actress aping Shakira's steamy moves while smearing herself with chocolate and gorging on junk food. “Most of those things people send you on the Internet are not that funny,” the singer says. “But this one is real, real funny.”
How come I'm not laughing?

I'm going to ignore the diatribe of a comment above and elaborate on the Shakira article.
Shakira is certainly misled when she comments that "the dance moves require" nudity. She does a Baladi style of belly dance anyway and the dancers are normally fully clothed, she herself used to dance fully clothed too, but in order to enter the commercial western market she died her hair blonde and conformed to the western stereotype of the belly dancer that dances scantily clad in harems and only to please men.
I would like to assert that one is not betraying feminism by belly dancing. Belly dancing originates from bith rites where women would gather around, support and encourage a woman in labour by doing pelvic floor exercises to aid birth. This quickly became a dance celebrating womens' ability to create, a dance normally done by women, for women. It embrace womens internal power and strentgh, it had nothing to do with gratifying men.
Belly dance- "Raqs Sharqi", is still danced in many houses by many women and men in the countries through which the gypsies travelled. Raqs Sharqi is often a very earthed and grounded form of dance, connecting one with nature and giving one strength. Raqs Sharqi contradicts Western ideals of feminine beauty, it celebrates womens bodies in all shapes and sizes and gives us confidence. It is also about women asserting their own sexuality rather than being passive objects on which to project the masculine sexuality and gaze. It brought women together to support eachother in their strife and I would say that belly dance, when understood and not exploited, is an extremely feminist dance.
It is hard to criticise Shakira's comment on fat is funny when considering the content of Elle and practically all womens magazines: they glorify skinni-ness, the consumerization and the objectification of women. We just have to stop buying into that crap.

Right on- Shakira is full of it when she says she doesn't expose her body except for the dance- at least be honest Shaki! Belly dancing does not require smearing one's body with oil and gyrating on a table like in the la tortura video which was indeed torture. That is your own bad taste, own it- PEOPLE LOVE IT AND YOU ARE MAKING MILLIONS- CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW ROCK STAR SUCCESS. Honestly I really hate her.

I really love Shakira!! My native language is Spanish, and her Spanish songs are full with very cleaver poetic images made up from the common daily things. However, her English songs are not that deep (maybe because she does not dominate the language as well as Spanish). She is a very intelligent woman (a reported IQ of 140, which is almost genius) No wonder she started to write songs before she was 14. And she is beautiful. So, she has all the elements to succeed. Regarding the “fat” thing, for those of you that haven’t follow Shakira before her English debut, she used to have a weight problem. She was a chubby teenager with a round face 17 years ago, but she overcame that with discipline, because she has a lot of it! That’s why she has the world believing her hips!
