I ran across a blog post talking very briefly about a documentary, produced by HBO, supposedly about the sex life of Dominicanos. The post said that it was a “montaje” (fake) and says (translation):
It’s not untrue that there is sexual frenzy in our society, but to me what is presented there seemed staged.
I watched the first part of the video, and I’m not sure what it says about Dominican sexuality (actually, I have some strong feelings about it with no relation to a culture — but I’ll keep those to myself for now), but apparently Dominican talk show host “Nuria” has a few things to say on her show tonight. We’ll stand by for her comments, but in the meantime, the Domincan Tourism secretary has something to add:
“The government’s secretary of tourism rejects the documentary presented by the American television network HBO which promotes the Dominican Republic as a sexual paradise, because the material is sensationalist and totally distorts the social and cultural reality of the Dominican people.”
I’m including a link to the video because I’d like to get our Dominicano readers’ take on what it says, if anything about your culture and your sexuality. Does it stereotype Dominican women? And to all readers: is it offensive?

So Shakira goes up to a priest and says…No, it’s not one of those lame priest and rabbi jokes, but a bit of chisme about Shakira’s asking a priest’s blessing before doing a sultry video:
The Colombian singer hunted a priest’s blessing before sharing a sweltering embrace with Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz for her most recent video ‘La Tortura,’ because she is in a serious and committed relationship with her fiance, Antonio De Le Rua, Argentina’s former president’s son.
And she’s about to get her ass whipped by one of the nuns at the Catholic school she attended because of her new sexy video, Don’t Bother:
Shakira’s sexy music video for her song ‘Don’t Bother,’ has infuriated a nun at the Catholic high school Shakira attended when she was young, according to a published report.
Shakira had a very strict religious upbringing and firmly states that she will never compromise her faith in efforts to sell music.
Shakira says, “One of the nuns is looking for me after seeing the Don’t Bother video.”

When I was growing up I would watch novelas with my abuelita, my babysitters, and my mother. It was part of my socialization. We would all talk over dinner about what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe as if the characters were people we actually knew. Now with Spanish language network Univision for sale, there is concern that as U.S. born Latinos, like me, are growing up, we are no longer tuning in for the “stories”, choosing English language networks with Latino themed shows and leaving our mamis and abuelitas alone watching what Juan Pablo did to Guadalupe.

Puerto Rico is heating up VL’s comments section. What do people think about Congressperson Jose Serrano and Puerto Rico’s (non-voting) Congressional rep Luis Fortuno’s proposal of a new way for Ricans to vote on the future of their island? They are calling for not one but two votes.
The first vote, to happen next year, would have only two choices : for la isla del encanto to remain a U.S. territory or something else. If people vote to keep P.R. a territory, regular votes would have to happen to see if opinions change. If the something else option wins then another vote, to go down in 2009, would place statehood against independence.
