Latinos Left Out of Katrina Response

dome3fund_sm.jpg A report released February 28 by the National Council of la Raza states that the disaster didn’t stop for the Latino community after Hurricana Katrina pased through, that it continues into today. The report, titled In the Eye of the Storm: How the Government and Private Response to Hurricane Katrina Failed Latinos states that a big reason why Latinos were left behind in the rescue and post Katrina aid effort was because of a lack of understanding about exactly how many Latinos were in the Gulf Region. Evacuation warnings in English went unheeded by the estimated 230,000 Latinos in the region. Notices may have been done in Spanish because initially the numbers of Latinos was put at about 100,000.

Even so, 100,000 is a large enough number of people to care about, unless of course those people are considered not worth saving. The report cites that:

FEMA did not provide emergency housing to Latino residents at an apartment complex in a New Orleans’ suburb, because officials assumed the Latinos were undocumented.

So apparently George Bush, and his government, hates black people and Latinos too.

Charity organizations aren’t off the hook though. The report states that the Red Cross volunteers evicted hurricane survivors, requested proof of status before offering emergency assistance such as shelter, and even allowed law enforcement to raid Red Cross shelters and kick out Latinos because it was assummed they were undocumented.

Talk about the American dream becoming the American nightmare.

Your entry is very similar to some of the entries at HuffAndBlow.

Unfortunately, that site is a parody, and I’m forced to assumme that you’re serious.

Bush doesn’t “hate” “Latinos”, he loves them. In fact, right after Katrina he lifted immigration enforcement in order to send the message that as many “undocumented” “Latinos” as possible should move in.

And, if people confuse the words “Latino” and “illegal alien”, perhaps there’s a reason. Perhaps you could look up past quotes from people like the odious Cecilia Munuz from the National Council of The Race in which she confuses the two groups.

As for the Red Cross incident, I’m sure the reader has already assummed that there’s a few details that haven’t been provided. Such as those workers being suspected of having been sent to that shelter to save their employer housing costs.
