009f3.jpgA follow-up to Monday’s story, “La Guerra Sucia: Mexico was not immune”, Mexico’s El Universal newspaper is reporting on the specific torture methods used in Mexico, known as the “Catalog of Torture”. The announcement was part of the Mexican special prosecutor’s press conference, held today, which brought to light a “censored” version of the report we talked about on Monday.

Not for the faint of heart, I’ve translated some highlights from the El Universal article:

“El pocito” (”the little well”) consisted in bringing the person to the verge of death by asphyxia.

“El pollo rostizado” (”the roasted chicken”) involved tying the subject’s hands and feet and placing him on a stake, with a cord tied to his genitals. The individual would have to be careful with his balance so as not to lose his “private parts”.

Jay Hernández loves his dog, hates fur

200-jayhernandezad.jpgUp-and-coming Latino actor Jay Hernández loves his dog, his cat and all animals; and he’s joined animal rights group PETA for an ad campaign to discourage the use of fur for clothing:

Jay Hernandez would never wear his dog—or anyone else’s dog, for that matter—and he doesn’t think you should either. In fact, the Hostel star feels so strongly about fur that he and his canine compadre, Donner, took time out of their busy movie-star schedules to pose for the latest “If You Wouldn’t Wear Your Dog, Please Don’t Wear Any Fur …” ad.

Jay, who will next be seen on the big screen in Oliver Stone’s upcoming movie, World Trade Center, looks sexy and striking in our new anti-fur campaign.

Other famous Latino “fur foes” (celeb endorsers of PETA) include Fernanda Tavares, Vanessa Olivarez and pseudoLatino Joaquin Phoenix.

picket.jpg I’ve written about how the U.S. Military is targeting young Latinos to join their shrinking rank and file. Well today young people in el Barrio, NYC aka Spanish Harlem are taking a step to resist and tell the military recruiters that music and Hummers are not worth their lives. Today at noon there will be a rally at 103d St. between Lexington & Park Avenues. According to a press release by the organizers of the rally:

The Pentagon’s personnel records reveal that in East Harlem in 2004, over 90% of the enlistees into the u.s. military (not including the marines who did not provide sufficient data) were Latino and the percentage of recruits from East Harlem was 15 times higher than that of the wealthy (and largely white) Upper East Side which is located right below East Harlem in Manhattan. In the South Bronx, which has the largest population of Puerto Ricans in New York City, the number of recruits into the u.s. military last year was 38 times higher than that of the Upper East Side.
