unmarked graves.jpg They came in search of a better life for themselves and their families. They came with dreams of jobs and being able to send something back to those they left behind. Since 1993 at least 1,000 of them have ended up in unmarked graves along the U.S.-Mexican border. They are those “illegals” you hear Lou Dobbs screaming about everyday on his television program. According to Katarina Rodríguez of Human Rights Coalition/Indigenous Alliance without Borders:

The situation is getting steadily worse, every year there are more dead migrants, and they are very difficult to identify, as sometimes only their bones are found.

Many of these deaths can be attributed to the harsh desert conditions faced by those crossing the border. There are also countless deaths by those attempting to enter the United States other ways such as via shipping containers, boxcars or trucks. Some die by shipwreck or via drowning, especially those attempting to migrate from the Caribbean region.

There have been some attempts by governments to warn immigrants about the dangers involved in making such a trip. The efforts are not just about discouraging migration though. The Mexican Foreign Ministry offers saftey tips in one such guide.

It’s the very least they can do after all, without ::gasp:: endorsing “illegal” immigration.
