ht_transplant_06023_sp.jpgFor all of you who are feeling negative about Latino-African American relations in light of recent news stories, here’s a little story that reminds us — pardon the cliché — that we are all just human and we need to help each other out:

The two men each needed a new kidney. Both had been looking for a donor. Paulette Chandler and Alfreda Torres told the Chicago Tribune they each had been separately asking for help for their husbands.

“Lord, bring us a donor,” Chandler said.

“Lord, help me find a way,” Torres hoped.

363010.jpgI was talking to a journalist this morning who was bringing me up to speed on a story that’s been buzzing about New York media in the last few weeks: that Mets coach Omar Minaya is being called a racist for saying that he feels more at home with Latino players. And apparently Minaya is a racist just for the mere fact that he has brought so many Latin American players to the club. I know nothing about baseball, but if they are playing well, who cares? And what’s wrong with “helping a brutha out”? People do it all the time. It’s called cultural affinity and it’s sometimes the only thing that keeps immigrant populations united in places where they should feel isolated.

Sports and immigration aren’t really topics that tend to cross much, but my eyebrows raised at a headline in today’s 20 Minutos newspaper from Spain: Futbolistas “sin papeles” debutan en la División Regional Preferente de Melilla

rbd.jpg Thank you all of you who joined us for VL’s first live blog. I know that Jen and I had a great time watching and writing our reactions to the Premio lo Nuestro. We all know who won pero I’m not quite done (Mira, I rhymed). I agree with Jennifer who reported that the sound quality overall was horrible. The theme of the evening to me seemed to be the growth of two major Latino musical genres: reggaeton and pop. A clear sign of this was the fact that Daddy Yankee was seated next to honorary Latina (will you all be happy with that?) Laura Pausini. Did you all peep Fat Joe sitting in the audience?

a167[1].jpg10:52: Award for “Best Regional Mexican Album”…Marco Antonio Solis…yayayada…

WINNER: Intocable!

10:54: Here we go with RBD. Damn, the sound is terrible. Their voices aren’t all that strong to begin with, but pobrecitos, this is not helping them AT ALL. Why does the guy keep saying “Venga RBD!!!” Like he’s ordering the girls to start singing. Annoying. Okay, I really cannot see the appeal of these guys. Even Onda Vaselina was better than this! Man, what’s happened to Mexico since I’ve been gone?

10:56: That’s it folks! Happy to have been your snarky companion on this deep artistic journey…oh wait, of course, it’s not really over. That would be too easy. RBD AGAIN. Maybe this wil sound better…Confetti, okay good start…rolling the credits…they are so gonna get cut off…teenagers jump onto the stage…RBD has to flee! Abrupt CUT.

Good night!

a167[1].jpg10:37: Andy Andy and Lu present “Best Rock en espanol artist”.

WINNER: JUANES!

Juanes is so great. “Todas mis canciones tienen un nombre y ese nombre es Colombia”. (Tearing up)

10:40: Okay some dumbasses are dancing “el perreo” in their evening gowns and tuxes. Where is Don Omar in all this? Best “Cancion genero urbano”. Oh, there’s Don Omar, nominated.

WINNER: Daddy Yankee! Why did this fool just call him “Danny Yankee”? Here we go with the subtitles again…”que tengamos los huevos reales…” WTF?

10:43: Paty is saying some oh-so-cliche crap about all Latinos loving their family and getting along perfectly. It’s an intro to a performance by Ana Barbara performing with…her siblings??? Huh?

Dude, her nose is unreal. I mean, I am biased because I hate her, but what is up with her nose? Wait…her bro has the same nose…so it’s not surgery!!!!!!!! Revelation of the year!!! She’s singing “Fruta prohibida” or something. Now some banda action with her bros. This is boring the hell out of me.

Man, these awards are LOOONG…

a167[1].jpg10:17: WINNER: Laura Pausini is “Best Female Pop Artist” of the year. Okay, I don’t love her music but her personality is awesome. She’s proud to sing in Spanish. So cute.

10:18: Oh my God, I know they didn’t just call Sergio Goyri “el gran actor”. What standards are they using? “Grandes estrellas de peliculas de narcotraficantes”? Okay, here we go, “Banda” of the Year…

WINNER: Banda El Recodo…does anyone else ever win this?

Poncho accepted the award without the rest of the band…what up with that?

10:20: The ads…I’m bored of them…sorry…

10:24: Video of the year…didn’t catch who was presenting…Oh, God, again with Laura Pausini…Luis Fonsi…Luis Miguel…SHAKIRA!…Vico C…Anasol…

WINNER: Luis Fonsi!

He’s looking mighty surprised. “Mucha gracia May-ami!” Is he enanito? He looks so short. Dedicates the award to his “coco”. Some dumb chick in the audience gets caught using her phone on camera.

10:27: “Grupo aerobatico antigravity” doing some acrobatics with some reggaeton peeps…sorry, I’m ignorant, who are these people? I can only distinguish Daddy Yankee…Pretty awesome light show and choreography, whoever they are. “Racata…rrracataa….si se me pega voy a darle”. Thank God for Closed Captioning for the hearing impaired.

a167[1].jpg10:00: The ads: Neutrogena Acne Wash with Paola Rey as spokesperson…Motrola Slivr; English ad translated to Spanish.

10:02: The moment I’ve been waiting for all night. One of my top 5 favorites in any genre, the marvelous Ana Gabriel, who’s receiving a lifetime achievement award tonight. Damn, the sound sucks again! She looks great though, in a glittery purple suit and purple eye shadow. You go, Anita! She’s totally suffering and feeling pain as usual…I love it!

10:05: Juanes gives Ana the award. She kisses him…so cute! She’s totally piropeando him saying she wants to take off his “camisa negra”. She says she wants to take advantage of having him on the stage to kiss him. “I don’t know if I deserve this or not, but I know that work and discipline is what counts. With effort, discipline and desire, you can achieve it.” Dedicates the award to her parents. ” Camera cuts to Pausini and she totally has the face of “No entender”. Starting to sing “Quien como tu”. YEAH!!! “Y nada tengo yo que esperar aunque me quedo en el aire…” I LOVE IT!!! She’s barefoot and rocking some sparkly jeans. DIVA.

10:10: Hell yeah, it’s a medley…the Mexican gay anthem “Simplemente Amigos”…”pero es que en realidad no aceptan nuestro amor…”

Strike that prediction about Shakira stealing the show…my girl Ana did.

a167[1].jpg9:30: Ninel Conde, luciendo su pechonalidad, presents Best Male Vocalist in Regional Mexican category. Luis Miguel is nominated…he isn’t “regional mexicana”…my fave Pepe Aguilar is nominated. He won’t win because it’s obvious who will. It’s his night.

WINNER: Marco Antonio Solis

9:32: Rene and Paty present Luis Fonsi. He’s in the middle of the audience and among a sea of Puerto Rican flags. Sorry, but his singing SUCKS. Missing all kinds of notes. Pobre.

9:35: The Ads: BIG advertisers: McDonald’s with “I’m lovin’ it”…not impressed. Lays, however, has a pretty cute ad. Quirky.

9:40: Monchy and Alejandra performing. Safe to say they are a cut above Luis Fonsi singing live. God, this song sounds just like that “vuela, vuela” song — or is it just me? The dancers are pretty cheesy…dressed like the 50s but with masks on.

9:45: Mayte Delgado and Alejandro Avila presenting “Best Grupero Artist”. Bronco…Grupo Inovacion…Temerarios…Marco Antonio…

Guess who…

WINNER: Los Temerarios! I totally thought it was Marco Antonio again. Fooled me!

a167[1].jpg9:22: Fernando Arau and Aron Gonzalez presenting Best “Genero urbano” artist. They are totally making fun of the reggaeton lexicon and pull out a “Reggaeton-Spanish / Spanish-Reggaeton” dictionary. Hmm…who will win. DUH.

WINNER: Daddy Yankee!

What is happening to me that DY looks appealing? Too much bitching about reggaeton comes back to bite you in the ass I guess. As usual I can’t understand.

9:24: Paty presents some Banda act. Didn’t catch who they were, I had to get up and that was the perfect time.

9:27: The ads…First GMC ad of the night. BORING…the same ones again and again. Unless there is something new, I won’t comment on them anymore.
