a167[1].jpg8:40: Best new artist…I KNEW IT…RBD. Like La Mala, I have no idea what their appeal is. They are just like Garibaldi.

8:45: Emilio Estefan (esta gordito) presenting an award for an artist whose career has spanned 30 years. Who is it? None other than Marco Antonio Solis. Standing ovation He looks like Jesus Christ, as usual, and as usual, thanks his look-alike. Singing a medley of his greatest hits. Very good performance, his voice is perfect. The cheeseball women behind him dancing are not. Also not okay was Ana Barbara and her new hubby Pirru (friends of Marco Antonio — he was at their recent wedding) hugging and singing along. Standing ovation.

8:49: The ads: MasterCard ad. Repeating World Cup Theme. Clothes ad…what is it? Music in Spanish but “mainstream” models…men and women flirting…what is this for??? JC Penney! Chevy truck ad set to a Spanish pop tune, nothing notable. Another cell phone ad…this time it’s not T Mobile but Verizon. Yeah, cell phone companies, tear each others’ eyes out for the Latino market!

a167[1].jpg8:20: The ads: Pepsi, with Eva Longoria…not a fave. TMobile: I love it. Guys texting each other, arguing whether a soccer play was a foul or not. Budweiser ad was boring. Nothing truly groundbreaking here.

8:25: My paisanos Intocable singing “Contra Viento y marea”. Awesome. Looks like they fixed the sound.

8:28: Award time: Best Tropical Album…I want Olga to win…

Everyone is screaming “OLGA!”

WINNER: YEAH!! OLGA!!!! I heart Olga!
Now she’s dancing with some reggaeton guy and singing her thanks.

8:30: No idea who these fools are. Un tal Jorge Reyes presenting Best Album, “genero urbano”.

WINNER: Luny Tunes and Baby Ranks…I can’t understand a word they are saying, except “Viva el reggaeton!”

8:32: The Ads: Hispanic Vitamins? “Only for the Hispanic community”…WTF???

The Wendy’s ad…I love it. It’s so silly but really my kind of funny. Glad to see I misread Stuart Elliot (NYT) in thinking that the real Latino artists were going to be in the ad.

Chevy Impala…typical car ad.

a167[1].jpgAlmost 8:00…start already! Got my beer and I’m ready to go.

What the HELL is Marco Antonio Solis wearing???

Not so live from San Francisco…

8:00 — Juanes!!! He always looks so effortless when he’s performing. OMG the sound is horrible. Can we get some production value over here?

8:05 pm — Juanes introduces Shakira. Wow — two HOT stars back to back! Pobrecita has got her pajamas on. It’s very her though. AGAIN with the horrible sound. Weird to see her not gyrating around. I love Shakira. Prediction: she will be the star of this show.

8:10 — Paty Manterola and Rene Strickler (hosts) come out. Dumb schtick. Paty welcomes the English speaking audience, letting them know that they can get the English channel for sound as well. Crowd cheers when Daddy Yankee’s name is mentioned and when they mention Luis Miguel…nada.

8:12 — First award, presented by Jaqueline “Saltamontes” and Roberto Palazuelos: Best Album. Shakira, Kumbia Kings, Pausini, Luis Fonsi, Obie Bermudez.

WINNER: SHAKIRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

8:15 — La Quinta Estacion presenting the next award, Females artist of the year, Regional Mexican category: Ana Barbara, Diana Reyes, Isabela, Mariana (who ARE these people???)

WINNER: Ana Barbara…sin comentario All really had to say was “gracias” but not to her new hubby

premiolonuestro.jpg RBD just arrived to many screams. Let’s just hope there isn’t a riot or a stampede. I don’t get what all the hype is about them really. Am I missing something?

7:43 – Ay si llego Daddy Yankee. In fact as Raul is interviewing RBD all you hear are people yelling “Daddy! Daddy!”.You know all those people aren’t looking for their papis!! Pero que papi! Nominated for four awards tonight, he is rocking some bling on his arm and wearing a suit that way a yummy Latino can.

7:47 – There was so much hype about the commercials for the premios, like the Wendy’s commercial I just saw where star impersonators are singing a benefit against mediocre food. In fact there was a whole article about it in the New York Times. Personally I still want some queso Tropical.

7:49 – Ok we’re finally back to the carpet. Daddy Yankee is being interviewed.

7:51 – Vico C is wearing a white suit with a matching white fedora. Gangsta!!

7:52 – Oh look at Shakira wearing a flowy white dress. Wait is it a dress? Looks like a sheer poncho over a white slip dress. Kind of hippy. Oh and are they ripping into her for that outfit. Wait it’s a poncho over white jeans and a white crop tank.

7:54 – Juanes is wearing a camisa negra!! What a surprise and how original. Looks like he will be opening the show.

7:58 – Was that Samy the famous hair guy? With all the ponytails I don’t know how much his services were used.

Why is Marco Antonio Solis wearing a burgundy suit? Que tacky Bukis!!

And with that la Mala signs off to watch the show. Stay tuned to watch Jenn’s coverage of the actual show. Hasta tommorow!!!

premiolonuestro.jpg Ay these Queso Tropical commercials make me hungry. Oh ok back to the carpet.

Winsin and Yandell came in seperate cars tonite. Could they be breaking up as a reggaeton power team? That’s the bochinche. They both are rockin white suits and shades. So far all the reggaeton stars look caliente..

7:35 – How many times are they gonna show Charytin?? She looks exactly how she looked when I was a kid. I remember seeing her when she had her show in Puerto Rico and I would go to filmings. Think she’s had work done?

7:37 – Ok are they going to another break already?? There are too many commercials during this red carpet

premiolonuestro.jpg Ok no one really cares what the Despierta America mujeres are wearing. Or do you ?

Who is that Paris Hilton lookalike?

7:26 : Laura Pausini is wearing a strapless dress that is aqua on top and close to hem is green. The commentators say she looks like she lost weight. Was she ever fat? Raul Molina is interviewing her and look so that we end the debate once and for all he called her European! Ok? Not Latina. Wow she is wearing this huge sparkling cross around her neck.

premiolonuestro.jpg Odalys Garcia, who came out of hiding recently on Don Franciso Presenta, looks lovely in a champaign colored dress that really cinches her waist and shows off her figura. Pero it looks like her hair could use a brush through it.

7:15 – Patricia Manterola , who is a main presenter tonight, is wearing a lacy black long dress with bell type sleeves. She looks beautiful. The back is open and her hair is pulled back. Most women have their up in ponytails tonight. Seems to be the stylish thing to do.

7:17 – Luny Tunes , the reggaeton production team just stepped out of a limo all suited up.

premiolonuestro.jpg No novelas for me tonight. Oh look English speakers can watch and understand the Premio show. Do gringos actually watch this? Felipe Viel is kissing fans. Lili Estefan is wearing a strapless lime green dress. She resembles a celery stalk. That’s how skinny la flaca is. Oh look she is with Emilio, the don of the Latin music world.

7:04- Oh man Ivy Queen, the Boricua reggaeton queen looks fabulous. Not ghetto at all in a creamy dress. Que elegancia for a reggeatonera!!! She doesn’t even look like herself!

7:05: Locos por Juana represent!!! I love them.

7:06: Charytin is dressed in a strapless pastel pink with her tetas all over the place. How old is she?? Strapless seems to be all over the place.

Latino kids pull on the purse strings

3:36 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bilingualism|children|Education|language|TV · Comments Off

23 Feb 2006

handymanny.jpgWhy is that television believes children can get down with Spanish while adults cannot? For whatever reason, prime time TV (with rare exceptions like Freddie Prinze‘s “Freddie”) doesn’t want to bother with bilingualism, even though Latinos are a perfect demographic: 600 billion in buying power, median age of 26, average household size of 4 members, yadayadayada…

There’s a huge rise in the use of Spanish and bilingual dialogues in mainstream children’s television programming. We’ve posted before about Dora La Exploradora, but she’s not alone.
