20 Feb 2006The blogs were afire last week with the news that Representative Henry Cuellar (D.-Texas) was supporting giving the Minutemen $100 million dollars in federal money to “protect our borders”.

Blue Latinos and MoveOn.org quickly launched into attack mode. From Blue Latinos:
We can change this dreadful situation right now — simply by creating legal means for migrant workers to participate in our economy. Let us not deceive ourselves anymore. And let us not allow any politician — whether Latino or not — to deceive us further. Building walls and giving away badges to untrained, gun-toting vigilantes is not the way. There is a better way to reform our disgraceful immigration system.

Congressional Representatives Charles Rangel, José Serrano, Nydia Velázquez from New York, Luis Gutierrez from Chicago, Governor of Puerto Rico Anibal Acevedo Vilá and Puerto Rico Resident Commissioner Luis Fortuño have called for hearings and an independent investigation in response to the FBI’s military-style assault and seizures in the homes and places of work of citizens who favor independence of Puerto Rico, as well as the pepper-spraying of members of the Puerto Rican press who sought to cover the events that happened nearly two weeks ago. In a press release issued today Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito declared:
We are 8 million U.S. citizens living throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, whose sons and daughters have served this country with distinction in all its wars since 1917. We have a right to know on what grounds the FBI determined to bring the War on Terrorism to the homes and places of work of Puerto Ricans who favor the Island’s independence?

Coal mining isn’t a career most of us consider when pondering what we want to do for a living. Apparently even children of miners, once the heirs apparent to the vocation, aren’t considering it anymore either. Enter Latino immigrants:
The local mine company here, Sidney Coal Co., is seeking to change Kentucky mining legislation so it can hire non-English-speaking Latino workers.
Kentucky law requires that miners be fluent in English for safety reasons, but Sidney Coal, a subsidiary of Massey Energy Inc., has claimed that it cannot find enough local workers.

The National Latina Health Network is hosting a Healthy Heart Day on February 25th in 6 different cities across the country to celebrate National Heart Month. The day will include free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, an opportunity for participants to speak briefly with a bi-lingual health counselor, receive educational materials about cardiovascular risk factors and leave with personal information to take to their doctors. All materials will be available in English and Spanish. One in four U.S. Hispanic adults has elevated cholesterol. In addition, heart disease is the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the U.S., according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Hispanics are twice as likely to have diabetes, a contributor to heart disease, than non-Hispanics.
In general Latinos (however you want to define them) are thought of as a warm or, dare I say, hot blooded people even though , as many of us know, we also live in cold places with ice and snow. Some of us make a sport of it and if you’ve been watching the 2006 Olympics in Torino, especially if you watched last night you know one of those is Benjamin Agosto. Last night he and his partner, Canadian born newly made U.S. citizen to compete under the stars and stripes, Tanith Belbin melted the ice with their Original Dance portion of the Ice Dance competition.
