Chicago Latina women are up in arms about a billboard campaign that was recently launched by Spanish-language radio station La Ley showing images of several women’s bums and the words “25 pegaditas”. The controversy has gone from grass roots quejas to mainstream media in no time:
…the ad shows an image of a woman, duplicated several times, photographed from behind and wearing skin-tight shorts. Her splayed hands pressed against her butt further accentuate her derriere.
The ad promotes the Spanish radio station “La Ley” WLEY 107.9 and a contest called “25 Pegaditas.” Listeners naming 25 songs in a row could receive a chance to win money.
In Spanish, “pegaditas” loosely translates to “little ones strung together.” But, according to the young women, “pegaditas” is also a play on the word “pegar,” which translates to “hits.” That’s “hits” as in popular songs. Or in the context of the ad, that’s “hits” as in smacks on the behind.

From time to time, the most interesting news from Latin America doesn’t reach our shores and I have to lean on my daily dose of European news to find these tantalizing tidbits. A good example of such news is this story (translated from Spanish by yours truly for your reading enjoyment):
A Brazilian adult television channel has launched a marketing campaign to attract subscribers in which it invites customers to imagine erotic scenes of one of their favorite actresses, with the possibility of being able to star in the scene if chosen…”It’s an innovative marketing strategy with a surefire success incentive, sex,” said advertising exec and porn film producer Robson Gonçalves.

Law enforcement and the media are blaming racial tensions between Latinos and African Americans inside the North County Correctional Facility, about 40 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, for the disturbances that happened on Saturday there, leaving 20 inmates hospitalized and one dead. Inmates threw mattresses and banged heads against bunk beds for nearly in hour.
Deputy Steve Suzuki, a sheriff’s spokesman said :
The motivation appears to be racial tensions and a carry-over of a feud between black and Hispanic gangs.
The inmate that was killed was a 45 year old registered sex offender. Since the violence, Latino and African-American inmates have been segregated, which is illegal but legal advisors say that the current state of emergency permits it.
